Lords turn up the heat in a political hothouse

IT WILL come as no surprise to many that the Houses of Parliament emit a lot of hot air.

What is curious, though, is that most of it originates from the House of Lords, not from the hotheads in the Commons. It could be that their lordships, like many of those advanced in years, like to keep their heating up.

The hothouse atmosphere of the Palace of Westminster is shown vividly for the first time in the photograph taken on a thermal imaging camera.It is intended to embarrass ministers into taking greater action to cut carbon dioxide emissions in Britain, and was released to coincide with the Kyoto Protocol coming into force today. The Government has made energy efficiency and climate change a priority for the British presidencies of the EU and the G8 summit of wealth-creating nations.

Areas in white on the photograph show exactly where the most heat is escaping. Red depicts the next-worst areas, then yellow and green. The blue line pinpoints where the least energy is escaping. The coldest spots are in black.
