A terminally-ill teenager who refused a heart transplant has been granted her wish - a holiday in Disneyworld.
Hannah Jones, 13, said she was “delighted” after a British company stepped in to provide travel insurance for the trip to Florida, which had previously seemed impossible.
Her family had been unable to find a company prepared to insure Hannah and the teenager had feared she would not be able to go on her dream holiday.
Hannah, who suffered heart failure as a result of treatment for leukaemia, will fly to the United States on December 1 with her family and 39 other seriously ill or disabled children in a trip organised by the charity Caudwell Children.
During the week-long trip the group will stay at the Give Kids The World resort - specially designed accomodation for children with a high medical dependency. They will be accompanied by a team of paramedics and doctors.
Hannah said: “I’m delighted, overwhelmed. With only a few weeks to go before we leave I feared that I wasn’t going to be able to go on the holiday.
“I absolutely love Disney and watch all of the films - to be able to go and see them is a dream come true.
“The week away from our routine of doctors appointments and hospitals will be a wonderful distraction for me and my family. We will feel like a normal family for a while.”
The insurance company, which wishes to remain anonymous, responded to a nationwide plea for help from the Jones family after their attempts to find insurance failed.
Hannah’s plight hit the headlines last week when it emerged that she had insisted to officials she did not want a heart transplant.
She had been warned that the operation might result in death, and was deemed mature enough by the Primary Care Trust in Herefordshire to take the decision not to have surgery.
Hannah’s father Andrew Jones, said: “I can’t thank everyone who has offered to help enough.
“Amidst all of the media coverage over the last few days our main aim was to find someone who could insure our little girl for her dream holiday. My wife and I are thrilled that we have been able to do this and now we can’t wait to see the smile on her face.”
Trudi Beswick, CEO of Caudwell Children, said the whole team at the charity was "delighted" that someone had stepped forward and they could grant Hannah her wish.
“Hannah and her family have had to deal with a tremendous amount of stress. Since Hannah was just four they have had to cope with caring for a seriously ill child.
“Now we want to give them the opportunity to spend some quality time together as a family and offer them the medical and physical support they need to relax and enjoy their holiday."
The trip has been funded by a year-long campaign organised by the charity.
