More than 2,000 viewers have complained to the BBC about the treatment of John Sergeant on the talent show Strictly Come Dancing.
The former political journalist announced yesterday that he was quitting the show after several bruising encounters with its judges and despite overwhelming public support that saved him from the boot while more talented contestants were voted out.
Sergeant explained that there was a very real chance that he and his Russian dance partner, Kristina Rihanoff, could have won, which would have been "a joke too far". He added that he had made the decision after reading a Times column complaining that the joke was already wearing a bit thin.
A BBC spokeswoman said today that the corporation had received complaints from at least 2,094 fans "unhappy that he's leaving the show". That contrasts with the 377 complaints received before yesterday about the fact that he was still taking part, despite his clear lack of talent on the dance floor.
The 64-year-old had been rated last by the judges for the past three weekends but was saved from the dance-off by viewers. One judge called him a "dancing pig in Cuban heels" while others accused him of hijacking what was meant to be a dancing contest.
The Controller of BBC One, Jay Hunt, announced yesterday that viewers who voted for Sergeant in last week's show could apply for a refund. The BBC has yet to work out the procedure for that refund, but has promised to do so before this week's show, where Sergeant and Rihanoff are to perform one last time.

BBC had this coming. If you invite non dancers to appear for public 'entertainment' then you can't complain when the public make their choices. Respect to Mr Sergeant who leaves with his dignity intact.
Mike Smith, Dunstable, Beds
Strictly is all about the public and judges choosing, the judges can make their choice so can the public those are the rules. What rights do the judges have to critisise the public if they want to see John back. The judges insulting John & Krisitina and making them leave is not right
David Stark, Esher, Surrey
Perhaps the judges should also be decided by a phone-in vote every week, if they can't stick to the format, then they're on the wrong show, bring back John Sergeant, power to the people, after all, it's not asif it's reality.
Pabric, Birmingham, West Midlands
Strictly is a dance competition. Let's have "Can't Dance. Won't Dance" where rhythmically challenged folk such as John Sergeant, GMTV presenters and the like can compete.
Let's keep Strictly for those who have the potential to learn from a pro to dance well (some very well).
E Davis, Bridgwater, Somerset
Dancing is surely not all about perfect technique - it's about community, health, joy, partnership, effort, willingness to learn and pleasure . John and his voters have done more for that definition than those judges have in the entire time the show has been on.
Laura Brook, Brighton, West Sussex
At the end of the day, it's a dance 'competition'. Yes, it's entertainment, but the professional dancers, as well as most of the remaining celebrities are there to learn, have fun, but to COMPETE.
I applaud Mr S for his integrity and humility.
T, Pontypridd, UK
Although I wanted the best dancer eventually to win the competition, I really loved watching John perform every week and he gave us great entertainment and good humour. It is really sad to see it all end this way but I admire him for making the brave decision to quit.
Elin, Hammersmit, UK
These 2000 people need to get a life. I bet these people were the same people that complained to the BBC about the Ross/Brand thing.
To these people - listen, it's a TV show. It really doesn't matter. Get out of your house, go and help an old lady cross the road. Do something good in your life.
Phil Turnbull, Barnet, UK
Florence Foster Jenkins, Ivor Cultor and Les Dawson, are examples of people who have made their names by performing badly. John Sergeant is obviously better at performing badly than the other contestants on SCD are at performing well and I've found him thoroughly entertaining.
Sarah, Brighton, UK
i believe the judges have always said what they have in mind about a performance regardless of who has performed . To be honest John going out of the show to me is not because of the judges. He might have just realized the competition has become a lot more tougher than he thought.
lilian, leicester, England
The judges can be in no doubt now that SCD is an entertainment show. The way that they behaved towards John was shameful and betrayed an elementary failure to understand the rules. John was magnificent. His leaving is a great loss but understandable in the face of such rudeness from the judges.

He had to go. He was making a mockery of the whole thing. It was never going to matter how hard the other contestants worked or how talented they were, if you had someone who was there for laughs they were always going to prevail.
Ade, Wellington, New Zealand
I thought he was more interesting of a character than the rest of them.
Will, Mildenhall, UK
Does this not surely show that the Jeremy Clarkson,Russell Brand, and Mock The Week complaints were blown out of proportion?!It seems more people are offended by someone dropping out of a dancing competition!I'm not defending the jokes made as yes some of them were taking it too far.
David Flack, Ipswich ,
I too am sorry that John has been put in this position. He has been a breath of fresh air on the show and has conducted himself with grace and dignity in the face of the judges unnecessarily cryptic remarks. Thank you John.
Margaret, Hastings, UK
I am very sorry to see John go.
