A lesbian soldier who claimed that she was sexually harrassed by a male sergeant has been awarded £187,000 in compensation.
Lance Bombardier Kerry Fletcher, 32, of the Royal Artillery, had sought £400,000. She told an employment tribunal in Leeds in November last year that her career in the Army had collapsed after she was propositioned by a sergeant. He suggested that she join in a threesome with another woman and that he might be able to convert her from being lesbian.
The incident took place in Royal Artillery stables in Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, and the tribunal was told that she was subjected to a sustained campaign of victimisation after she rejected the advances. John Mackenzie, her solicitor, said that her position had become untenable after she had won her case against the MoD. Lance Bombardier Fletcher will end her career early next year after 12 years. The tribunal said: “This is as severe a case of victimisation following an allegation of sexual harassment as one could see in an employment tribunal.”

Compo claim? probably but it is interesting that all the negative comments come from males, probably white heteros who have few problems with harrassment, small brains but big mouths! All male orientated jobs come with this problem and usually because if a girl can do the job its not so big n macho!
J, Sheffield,
While the compensation given to soldiers who are maimed and injured is woefully inadequate, that doesn't mean the compensation given to Kerry Fletcher is excessive.
She's lost her career. Her livelihood and what she has been working on for the last 12 years of her life. That's a horrendous loss
Paul, Hull,
I find that this is a disgrace to every soldier who has ever been injured in combat and had a pitance in compensation paid to them, i think that Lance Bombardier Kerry Fletcher should feel guilty about this and should maybe make a large donation to charity.
Williams, Wallasey,
When one joins the armed forces they are aggreeing to risk life and limb. They are not, however, aggreeing to be sexually harrassed. No one should ever be put in a position where their career, their whole lives, depend on their reaction to sexual advances from their boss. She got what she deserved.
Jason B, derby, uk
I was a serving soldier for 14 years in the Artillery and a Sgt for 5 - sexual discrimination was rife and in my view completely unacceptable. Ms Fletcher has been in for 12 yrs and is only a L/Bdr - clearly her career has suffered. A soldier is a soldier regardless of sex or orientation.
T Carr, Capel, UK
What will our frontline squaddies think of this? It shows how the peacetime employment law (in trying to uphold equality, blah, blah) makes a nonsense when placed against the value of human sacrifice required of this woman's colleagues. It is a sick joke.
Kirk, Nottm, UK
She got her compensation because she'll lose earnings from a job she's experienced in and have to take a lower paying job. She'll lose a lot of benefits such as housing too. She deserves this payout.
We don't have to find new work because of our sexual orientation, so why should she?
Andrew, Fareham,
Of course she did this for compo. Who are the idiots though - her with her £187,000 or us for putting up with a government that allows this to happen? It is sickening to see this when people fighting for their country who truly deserve it get much less. What a state our country is in....
Pete, Maldon,
What is wrong with this country? This makes a mockery for the help the heroes campaign. Nothing can justify such a payout. The judge should be suspended. Once again, our legal system is a laughing stock.
Paul, Middlesbrough, UK
Trying to compare injury compensation with this is absurd and pointless.
Soldiers should expect to get injured or killed in their work. They should not expect to be bullied or sexually harrassed. One is part of the job, the other is intollerable in civilised society.
David, Hereford,
Having served for 37 years this sort of thing repulses me. There can be no justification for such a payout. No 32 year old female Lance Bombadier is going to be bothered by such advances, how did he get her mobile number? This is a calculated plan by her which has paid off handsomely. Unbelieveable
Sam Johnston, Uckfield, England
Obscene is an understatement how the courts justify a payment like this is beyond me especially when you think that unless I'm wrong the Ministry of Defences money is provided by the taxpayer, I doubt servicemen who have been injured or disabled fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan get such payments!
Bob, London, UK
perhaps they should take it out of the wages of the offender, maybe it will teach them something or not.
ken moody, sheffield, yorkshire
The unfairness is not with the level of her compensation, it is the appalling compensation awarded to injured veterans.
G Varma, Bristol, UK
why does everyone blame the compensation recipient? I don't see here or on other news outlets, any consideration for the sustained negligent behaviour of the MOD personnel here. Blame the victim mentality is perplexing to me - why not blame the perpetrators (if you have to)?
admin, australia,
Just think of all the body armour, improved armoured cars and ammunition this wasted money could have purchased for our valiant troops.
This woman's "compensation" is an insult to all her colleagues and all those who have selflessly sacrificed life and limb for our country.
alastair, stourbridge, united kingdom
You've obviously not been in the forces or you would know its not as clear cut as you think. Think about Deepcut why didn't the soldiers who allegedly 'committed' suicide not go to their superiors.
I just think its wrong those injured on active service get paltry payouts in comparison.
DCH, Nottingham, UK
It seems a bit much, but if she has done a full career in the Army her wages for the next 10 years would be a lot higher. What about the police officer who recd £400,000 in compensation and his pension is worth £85,000 a year. Now that is unfair.
Jason Rees, Newport, Wales
Her case is not connected to other cases in the Gulf - however they are other examples of the MOD letting us down. Good luck to the girl - there is far too much mistreatment of personnel going on in the forces - I know...
She served for 12 years - I think she has proven her credentials!
terry, London, uk
Another example of the "Victims" looking for a nice little earner. This young lady was a lance bombardier after such a length of service. That tells me she wasn't a high achiever and would probably have left after 12 years anyway - and probably not offererd her 22years service extension. Nice one!!
Brian, Liverpool, UK
People are struggling to keep/find jobs, she had a good job which paid her a good salary also big handsome compensations for silly little things as that, why did she not seek help from these big 4 star Generals in the Army, why should she, she wouldnt get this little earner otherwise.
Harry, London, U.K
What a nice little earner for her. part of the deal should be to renistate her and ship her out to Afghanistan or Iraq.
This is totally unacceptable for the Public to see awards like this in comparison to injury and amputation awards to brave soldiers sailors and airmen and women.
Keithw, Wirral, UK
How much compensation will the young female officer get who lost a limb in Afganistan today?
When is the Compo system going to be fair?
A paralysed soldier has recieved less tthan this.
Why didn't she go to a superior officer? Methinks she saw Compo in big letters.
Howard, Basildon, England
