Bloggers have called for a mass protest against today's bombings and have insisted that Londoners will not be intimidated by the string of attacks on their city.
"The outrages in London are the work of enemies of humanity. There should be massive demonstrations throughout Britain this weekend to show our solidarity against them," said Paul Anderson on the libsoc blog.
There were other calls for action against the bombers, who killed at least 33 and left 150 seriously injured. Bloggers had no doubt the attacks were the work of terrorists.
Tim Worstall, the leading Brittish blogger said: "Tomorrow we’ll find out whether Britons are, still, in fact, Britons." He said that when he worked in the City there were two events that made travel into work almost impossible. "The first was a series of storms that brought down power lines … Not surprisingly, the place was empty the next day. Why bother to struggle through?
"The other event was an IRA bomb which caused massive damage and loss of life. Trains were disrupted, travel to work the next day was horribly difficult and yet there were more people at work than on a normal day ...
"Yes, we’ll take an excuse for a day off, throw a sickie. But you threaten us, try to kill us? Kill and injure some of us? F**k you, sunshine. We’ll not be having that."
Claire 345, posting at the My pet jawa site, echoed similar thoughts:
"There is no other nation on earth that can absorb crisis with such calmness and professionalism as Britain," she said.
"The terrorists’ anger towards us pales into insignificance with our determination to beat them. And we will."
Andrew Sullivan, the right-leaning American-based blogger, who also writes for The Sunday Times, called for cross-political solidarity. He was one of many American bloggers to single out Ken Livingstone, the London Mayor, for praise.
"How dumb are these fascists to take on the Brits and the Americans? Sure, we fight with each other; but up against this kind of evil, our divisions are petty.
"I also admire Livingstone's ability to see how liberal and left-wing Londoners who have helped build an amazingly vibrant, diverse and tolerant city are particularly affronted by these medieval monsters … I don't mean we won't continue to differ over means and methods and tactics and strategy. We will. That's our strength. But right and left, we are in this together."
