Asylum-seekers end hunger strike

Zimbabwean asylum-seekers agreed to temporarily call off their hunger strike until the High Court rules on whether the Home Office can forcibly deport them.

The 55 detainees at Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre in West London said that they were ready to starve themselves to death if Charles Clarke tried to expel any of them before refugee groups had a chance to begin their legal challenge. Two of them are being treated in hospital. Whitehall officials said that they will not attempt to remove any of them until after the August 4 court hearing. The legal battle began after The Times revealed that some deportees had been abused since being sent back.

Mr Justice Collins called on Mr Clarke to postpone deportations until he had studied evidence suggesting that asylumseekers are in danger of being abused in Zimbabwe because they claimed asylum in Britain.

He said it was “arguable” that it was unsafe to return failed asylum-seekers to Zimbabwe. Home Office lawyers said that there was no evidenceof any systematic abuse of failed asylum-seekers returned to Zimbabwe.
