Woman advised to give paracetamol to dying son

Reading A 12-year-old boy died after his mother requested doctors to make a house call to examine him but was advised to give him paracetamol.

Rosemary Farr, 51, said that her son Daniel fell unconscious and stopped breathing after she had pleaded with an out-of-hours GP service to give him medical attention.

The previously fit and healthy schoolboy started feeling unwell and vomiting after attending a friend’s birthday party on Friday evening. He died at home on Sunday morning, despite his mother’s repeated calls to WestCall, which is based at Wokingham Hospital. Mrs Farr said that the out-of-hours service failed her son.

She said that she had decided against dialling 999 after being given the impression that her son’s condition was not serious. The family immediately rang for an ambulance when Daniel stopped breathing but paramedics found that he had suffered a cardiac arrest and they could detect no signs of life.

An inquest has been opened and a postmortem examination is expected to take place this week.
