The Duke of Beaufort has been paid more than £280,000 of taxpayers' money for allowing a footbridge to be built across a Welsh river.
The duke's ancestors were granted ownership of the bed of the River Tawe as well as fishing rights by Charles II more than 400 years ago. He is entitled to the money as “easement” for the bridge, which links a shopping centre to the Liberty Stadium, home of Swansea City football club and the Ospreys rugby team.
The payment of £281,431 for the 70ft bridge was revealed after a request under the Freedom of Information Act by Ioan Richard, a Swansea councillor. Mr Richard said: “I'm furious that public money had to be used to pay one of Britain's richest estates. For centuries Swansea folk have paid rents to the Duke of Beaufort and we don't owe this powerful and wealthy family anything. It's crazy that taxpayers are having to fork out to a man who is worth millions. It's time that Parliament reviewed the powers of feudal lordships.”
Swansea council said: “Any developer looking to build on or over privately owned land has to pay a sum to the landowner for a legal easement, if required. The Duke of Beaufort owns a section of River Tawe's riverbed and is entitled to a sum whenever bridges are constructed over it.”
The duke, with a fortune estimated at £130 million, is the 581st richest person in Britain, according to The Sunday Times Rich List. A spokesman for his Somerset estate at Badminton, which manages his land and properties, said: “We do not want to comment about a private transaction.”

Why are the rich and powerful rich and powerful? Why would the aristocracy worry about public footbridges or public transport or state schools or the health service etc? Their main purpose in life is to retain their power and wealth. The 11th Duke and his cohorts are typecast in our feudal system.

Imagine someone building a bridge in your back garden, or on a piece of land you owned, surely you would expect compensation?

How quaint that a 'gift' given by the royal family 400 years ago leads to tax payers today giving more money to rich people. Nothing much has changed in all that time?
