"The shooting at Stockwell Station is being referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission for investigation, in line with normal requirements under the Police Reform Act 2002," he said. "The IPCC independently investigates all fatal police shootings. In carrying out this investigation, the IPCC will ensure that nothing is done to hinder the urgent police priority of tracking down and bringing to justice those responsible for the recent London bombings and their vital work to prevent further outrages."
In a statement tonight, Shami Chakrabarti, director of human rights organisation Liberty, said: "Our hearts go out to the family of the dead man and to the officers involved in this tragic incident.
"No-one should rush to judgement. In any case of this kind - especially at a time of heightened tension - there must be a prompt, comprehensive and independent investigation into what happened.
"This must cover the relevant guidance, training of officers, as well as the facts of the particular operation.
"These are knife-edge split second decisions made in moments of grave danger. We have a massive shared interest in the protection of innocent lives."
The Met statement came after a mother who flew from Nigeria to find her missing son after the July 7 attacks said her final goodbye to him today at a funeral mass in Westminster Cathedral. Hundreds of family, friends and colleagues paid their last respects to 26-year-old Anthony Fatayi-Williams, who was killed in the No 30 bus explosion in Tavistock Square.
The British-born oil executive, who worked for Amec in Old Street, went missing after setting out from his home in Hendon, north-west London. His mother, devout Catholic Marie Fatayi-Williams, flew in from Nigeria and sustained a passionate campaign in a bid to find her son.
She said at the time: "My son Anthony is my first son, my only son, the head of my family. In African society we hold on to sons. We are waiting to know what happened to him and I, his mother, I need to know what happened."
Days later Anthony was formally identified by his dental records as one of the Tavistock Square victims.
Today his mother and father Adebayo Fatayi-Williams, launched the Anthony Fatayi-Williams Foundation for Peace and Conflict Resolution in his memory. Dr Adebayo Fatayi-Williams, his Muslim father, said: "We, Anthony's parents, have resolved to lend ourselves and our voice to finding peaceful ways to overcome violence and terror. Violence in whatever form is not the solution to the issues of differences between peoples and civilisations.
"Violence only begets more violence, more hatred and more pain and indeed more suffering. Enough is enough."
Ken Livingstone, the London Mayor, today criticised a decision by Inter Milan, the Italian football giants, to cancel a pre-season tour of England over safety fears. The Serie A team were due to play Leicester on Monday night and play three further friendlies against Crystal Palace, Norwich and Portsmouth.
Today Mr Livingstone told Sky News: "The terrorists I am sure will be celebrating their decision. We cannot allow the terrorists to change the way we live or they will be very close to achieving their aim."
Roberto Mancini, the Inter Coach, and club owner Massimo Moratti had insisted on Friday that they would honour their commitment despite the terrorist activity in London. But a statement on the club website today reversed the position.
It said: "Football has taken a step back because of increasing serious events which touch the sensitivity of everyone. For this reason, and given the situation, the club has decided to cancel the team's tour of England."
A statement on the Crystal Palace website said: "Club officials are saddened and angered at the late decision despite the fact that only one of the games is in London and that other international sporting events in the capital including both cricket and athletics have gone ahead."
