A search has begun for the mother of a three-hour old baby abandoned on a freezing school playing field.
Two boys, both 16, found the newborn child , wrapped in a pink blanket, in bushes at the Daubeney Middle School in the village of Kempston in Bedford. They contacted an 18-year-old friend with a car and all three rushed her to hospital .
Bedfordshire police have praised the "quick and speedy efforts" of the boys who raised the alarm at 1.30pm.
The little girl is now said to be safe and well at the Bedford South Wing Hospital .
It is not thought she had been left exposed to the icy conditions for long, but police said attempts had been made to hide the child with "twigs and leaves".
Officers remain concerned for the welfare of the baby's mother and have appealed for her to get in touch urgently.
Detective Sergeant David Cartwright, leading the hunt for the new mum, said: “Whatever the reason for this woman abandoning her child, we can help and tell her that the baby is alive and well.
“The nursing staff at the Bedford South Wing Hospital, where the teenage boys took her, say that she was only two or three hours old when she was taken to them
“Undoubtedly it is due to the quick and sensible thinking of these boys that the baby is alive. The weather conditions are absolutely freezing."
Gary Sanderson, spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service, said the police had asked staff to keep an eye out for a young woman who might be in distress.
"The baby is very lucky to have survived being abandoned in such freezing and foggy conditions. The temperature in the area is about minus five degrees - it is bitter. The boys who found her are no doubt the heroes of the day,” he added.

Gillian Mead, I wouldn't normally comment online like this, but I had a little girl who was born on December 16th (2000) and died 2 months later. I'm sorry for your loss and understand your family's devastation. It is extremely painful to read stories like this. My heart goes out to your daughter.
Kelly, Falmouth, UK
Leave the mother alone - for all you know she could be very young and very scared. Have a bit of compassion.
Julia , Modbury, Devon
i don't think they should prosecute the mother, how awful! god know's what she's been through, it's no excuse to leave a newborne baby in the cold but you don't know any of the circumstances.
akara, london, england
Instead of prosecuting the mother you might consider the question what situation made that mother so desperate that she felt compelled to leave her newborn there. Some compassion please...

well done lads you should be proud of yourselves for the rest of time
you have done us all proud

response to:
How do we know a woman abandoned the baby?
it clearly wasnt a man who gave birth to the child, the mother obviously hasnt been in conact to find out about her baby, therefore she has been abandoned.the police are investigating every avenue & are rightly concerned about the mother.
Rebecca, Edinburgh,
Hooray for some good news about teenage boys!!
Hope you get treated as heroes by your mates, guys.
Winnie, Melbourne, Australia
Fantastic job by these young men. The UK can be proud.
Just some thought from the Midwest, US, though....Most likely the mother abandoned this child however we do not know that the father played no part in the situation.
Very sad that any parent would feel so desperate as to leave a child to die.
Carol, St Louis, MO
lovely to hear that there is some good kind caring teenagers out there. we only hear of the bad ones,so its wonderful to hear of the good ones. well done lads, hope you get a reward.
pauline , leeds,
How do we know a woman abandoned the baby? Surely Police should leave all options open, rather than making an assumption as DS David Cartwright appears to do.
Adrian Hudson, Nelson, Lancashire
Miriam, Bristol - Let's not demonise this infant's mother because we don't know any of the circumstances that led her to abandon her baby. It's easy to throw stones from the haven of your own safe, ordered life but not so for others. And three cheers for the three lads who acted so sensibly too!

I feel Prince Harry should confer a medal to each boy next XM.

Good on you, lads.

I am fed up of this happening and the authorities just say "we can help her." Don't help her, prosecute her. If she was responsible enough to have sex and have a child, she's responsible to face a criminal sentence for child abandonment, possibly attempted murder.
James, London, UK
How very sad. I have always wanted a child and never been able to have one due to my wifes infertility. The mother and father must be mad to abandon a human life while so many others would appreciate it.
Tom, Lichfield,
My daughters much wanted baby daughter was Stillborn on the 16th December, this story made me cry.
Gillian Mead, Westbury, UK
Teenage boys are often given a hard time, but the quick thinking behaviour of these three saved a young baby's life and they should feel immensely proud. Well done to them. I hope the little baby is receiving lots of love and cuddles from the midwives as all newborns should.
Name withheld, York,
Well done to the boys who found the baby, they were no doubt very vigilant and the purity of their hearts is demonstrated in their service to the child.
Ade , Essex, UK
Well done you 3 You make an aging man feel good again.
Peter S Wood, Stafford, UK
Well done to these boys for saving the baby's life! I hope that they prosecute the mother - there is no excuse for abandoning a child in such circumstances in this country.
Miriam, Bristol,
Well done to the 3 lads for thinking and acting so quickly. There are plenty of decent youngsters about but we usually just read about the not so good ones.
