ONE in seven of Britain’s young men is anxiety ridden, according to a new report. Instead of enjoying their carefree twenties and thirties, men are racked with worry about employment issues, time pressures and financing their lifestyles.
While one in ten of men of all ages feels that the pressure of modern living is too much to handle, the anxiety peaks among those aged 25-44 who feel stressed and overworked.
A study conducted by the market research analyst Mintel found that men are going through an “early-life crisis” as opposed “mid-life crisis”.
Angela Hughes, Mintel’s consumer research manager, said: “The key problem is young men’s overambitious aspirations for themselves and their families. Over the next few years this group wants it all — better job, better home, more holidays, more time for themselves. And they hope to achieve all this while reducing their debt levels as well.”
According to Men’s Changing Lifestyles, one in three men is preoccupied with concerns over personal health and that of others around them.
Ms Hughes said: “The role of men in society has been the subject of much debate over the past three decades. It is clear that many of the changes taking place, particularly in family and working life, have challenged traditional male roles, which seems to have left many feeling they lack direction.”
