BBC's Katrina reports 'full of hate for America'

A DISPUTE arose between Downing Street and the BBC yesterday after it emerged that Tony Blair had said that the corporation’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina was full of hatred towards America.

Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and CEO of News Corporation — the parent company of The Times — told an audience of media executives in New York on Friday that the Prime Minister had criticised the BBC’s coverage of the disaster.

Mr Blair met Mr Murdoch in New York on Thursday. Speaking at a seminar organised by Bill Clinton, Mr Murdoch said: “Tony Blair — perhaps I shouldn’t repeat this conversation — told me yesterday that he was in Delhi last week and he turned on the BBC World Service to see what was happening in New Orleans. And he said it was just full of hate for America and gloating about our troubles.”

Downing Street officials refused to comment. However, the BBC expressed surprise that Mr Blair should hold such strong views and fail to inform the corporation.
