Support for contraceptive nurse
A sexual health nurse who gave a girl a contraceptive jab in a McDonald’s restaurant lavatory has been backed by her employers. Angela Star, named Nurse of the Year by the National Association of Nurses for Contraception and Sexual Health, told of her fight to combat unwanted pregnancies at an international health conference in Belfast.

The work of the teenage pregnancy specialist for Gateshead Primary Care Trust in Tyneside involved girls as young as 13. She admitted standing at school gates to give a girl emergency contraception and giving the jab to another teenager in the McDonald’s lavatory. She would help girls wherever they felt comfortable with her, she said.

Her methods were said to be “totally unacceptable” by the pro-life charity Life yesterday, but a spokeswoman for the Trust said: “Gateshead Primary Care Trust has a duty and a responsibility to give contraceptive advice to young people.

“Our specialist nurse for teenage pregnancy has a specific role to play in giving advice to under-19s by meeting them where they feel most comfortable, following established health protocols.”
