Hussain Osman, who was extradited from Italy yesterday, will be taken before Bow Street Magistrates sitting in the high-security courtroom beside Belmarsh prison, southeast London. He was charged last night with conspiracy to commit murder, trying to kill London Underground passengers and explosives offences relating to the events of July 21, when attempts were made to blow up three Tube trains and a bus.
Mr Osman, 27, who is also known as Hamdi Isaac, is accused of trying to set off a bomb on a train at Shepherd’s Bush, West London.
He fled to Rome after the failed bombings and was arrested there on July 29. His return came after a two-month legal battle against extradition. Italian police took Mr Osman from his cell in Rebibbia jail at 9am yesterday and drove him to Ciampino airport, outside Rome, where a private aircraft was waiting. He was transferred into the custody of the Metropolitan Police’s extradition unit who were on the chartered jet, which landed at RAF Northolt, West London, at 1.35pm.
Within 20 minutes of the aircraft touching down Mr Osman was being driven in a three-vehicle police convoy to Paddington Green police station, where he was charged.
Mr Osman, who is married with three children and lived in Stockwell, South London, is accused of being part of a terrorist cell that tried to set off explosive devices two weeks after the July 7 suicide bombings, in which 56 people died.
Mr Osman, who was born in Ethiopia and claimed asylum in Britain in 1996, evaded arrest by travelling on a Channel Tunnel train to Paris. He then caught trains to Rome.
Three other men have been charged in Britain over the attempted bombings. They are Muktar Said-Ibrahim, 27, of Stoke Newington, North London; Ramzi Mohammad, 23, of North Kensington, West London; and Yassin Hassan Omar, 24, of New Southgate, North London. All three are accused of attempted murder, conspiracy to murder and making or possessing an explosive with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury on July 21.
Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, 32, of Finsbury Park, North London, faces charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions. All four are held on remand at Belmarsh and will appear before an Old Bailey judge on December 8.
