Subhaan Younis, 23, had been found guilty of committing a breach of the peace after showing Charlotte McClay the footage last September in the Moat House Hotel, in Glasgow. Passing sentence at Glagow District Court, Magistrate Euan Edment told Younis that he had left Ms McClay shocked, upset and frightened after playing her the video clip.
He said: “You chose to let her view the images on your telephone and told her that she might have nightmares. The woman had no idea what she was about to view. No reasonable person might have anticipated viewing such dreadful and distressing images in such circumstances. I struggle to understand why any decent individual would have images showing the degradation and death of another human being, regardless of their race, political or religious persuasion.”
Younis, of Glasgow, had shown Ms McClay the footage during a conversation at the hotel, where she worked in a shop and he was staying as a guest.
After chatting about the Iraq conflict, Younis offered to show her something that would cause her a sleepless night, Dominic Sellar, his solicitor, told the court. Mr Sellar said that his client thought that Ms McClay realised that she was about to see a video of a hostage being beheaded. He said that Younis now accepted that he had made a colossal mistake.
Witnesses at the trial spoke of how Ms McClay was left pale and shaking after seeing the footage. Paul Jackson, 19, a concierge assistant at the hotel, said: “She was upset and water was welling up in her eyes.”
