MoD chaplains for other faiths

The Ministry of Defence has approved a number of measures over the years to meet religious and cultural needs, such as prayer mats for Muslims and turbans for Sikhs.

The four chaplains will be part of the Armed Forces chaplaincy teams, but unlike their Christian counterparts they will not be in uniform and will not be expected to travel on overseas operations. They are being employed as civil servants at C1 grade, which is the equivalent of lieutenant-colonel, and will earn between £26,000 and £37,650 a year. Recruits are not obliged to state their faith when joining up, but voluntary replies show that there are at least 305 serving Muslims, 230 Hindus, 220 Buddhists and 90 Sikhs, compared with 183,000 Christians.

The MoD also plans to recruit a full-time chaplain of the Jewish faith.
