Guantanamo protest

  • Activists from the pressure group Reprieve, right, re-enacted outside the US Embassy in Central London what they claim is the force-feeding of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the American high-security prison in Cuba where seized terror suspects are held without trial.

    More than two hundred inmates, including at least six Britons, are currently on hunger strike at the facility, according to Amnesty International and Reprieve.

    They believe that some detainees have been restrained and force fed, and want the British Government to seek a pledge from the United States to allow independent observers access to the prisoners.

    The call came as American senators voted overwhelmingly to outlaw cruel or degrading treatment of detainees held in US custody abroad.

    The United States disputed the hunger strike numbers that have been provided by the human rights groups. It said that 28 detainees are now on hunger strike, down from a previous high of 131.
