Continuity IRA
Emerged from a split in the Provisional IRA in 1986
Claims its "north Armagh battalion" responsible for last night's shooting dead of a police officer at Craigavon in Co Armagh.
Judged to be active in planning and carrying out attacks on police, including a tripwire bomb targeting a police patrol in June, and an attempted rocket grenade attack in Lisnaskea in August.
On August 25 hijacked and set fire vehicles in a possible attempt to lure police into an ambush; on August 26 orchestrated stone-throwing and petrol bomb attacks, during which shots heard. Has also threatened customs and vehicle licensing officers who help the police.
Actively recruited and trained members in bomb-making and making weapons hides.
Blamed for numerous assaults in April and May, including a particularly serious incident in Armagh. Involved in drug dealing, robbery, "tiger" kidnapping, extortion, fuel laundering and smuggling.
Assessment: "Focused particular efforts on attacks on members of the PSNI which could have resulted in loss of life... remains a very serious threat"
Real IRA
Formed in 1997 after a split in the Provisional IRA, responsible for Omagh bombing on August 15 1998 that killed 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins.
Has claimed responsibility for shooting dead two British soldiers, and wounding two more soldiers and two pizza delivery drivers during gun attack at gate of Massereene barracks in Co Antrim on Saturday.
