The 1970 interview, conducted by Jan Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone magazine, took place soon after the group’s break-up. In it Lennon accuses Paul McCartney of being “form and no substance” and claims that their songwriting relationship ended as early as 1962.
The first British broadcast of the excerpts will take place on The Archive Hour on December 3. During the interview Lennon says: “One of the main reasons the Beatles ended is because . . . we got fed up with being sidemen for Paul.” He said that McCartney wanted thanks “for keeping the Beatles going. But he kept it going for his own sake.”
Relations between the two had improved by the time Lennon was murdered by Mark Chapman in 1980. Recordings of the killer discussing his motivation will be broadcast on American TV tonight and by Channel 4 next month.
The Lennon interview is part of a series of BBC radio programmes marking the 25th anniversary of his death.
