A legal change allowing police to keep DNA samples from suspects even if they were cleared in court has led to 7,990 crimes being solved. The change was made in 2001 amid criticism from civil liberty groups. Andy Burnham, a Home Office minister, told a Commons select committee that forensic science teams have made DNA matches against samples in 96 murder investigations, 116 rapes and 50 attempted murders.
