Details on her blog match up with her real life. “Abby” describes how she was on a film set in march 2004, at a time when Margolis was on the set of Batman Begins.
In one extract from her diary she describes a list of stars she’d like to get to know intimately. They include Christopher Eccleston, the former Doctor Who actor, Orlando Bloom, who appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean, and Clive Owen, who was nominated for an Oscar in the British film Closer.
“Give me a few years — I hope to have ’em all on my casting couch by then,” she says.
Some critics revile the book as low-brow pornography, say it lacks humour and is poorly written. “Abby” admits her literary style is inferior to that of Belle.
The book will reignite the debate over female “raunch culture”, sparked by Female Chauvinist Pigs, Ariel Levy’s book about the eagerness of young women to indulge in sexually overt behaviour. Levy argued “raunch” was corrupting women rather than empowering them.
Margolis, whose mother is a Hampstead-based psychotherapist, is said to be an ardent feminist but she does not hide from the potential ambiguities of her situation.
Her character Abby asks: “Does thinking about sex all the time mean there’s something wrong with me? It’s a question I ask myself on an hourly basis . . . Is it common to look at men’s crotches as they walk down the street?” With such a shameless interest in sex it is no surprise Margolis has gone to great lengths to try to conceal her identity. Her name does not appear on the electoral roll and her phone number is ex-directory.
In her blog last week she described her “paranoia” that the book’s release would lead to her being unmasked.
Margolis declined to comment when contacted this weekend. But she happily signed for a bouquet of flowers when told they were from her publishers.
Caroline Newbury, a spokesman for Ebury Press, said she could not comment. However, she appeared unwittingly to confirm that Margolis was Abby when she added: “That’s not my decision, that’s Abby’s . . . And you left messages for Abby.” The Sunday Times had only left telephone and e-mail messages for Margolis.
Her book reveals that she works as a freelance camera assistant. The job, she writes, has given her a chance to socialise and pursue her favourite activity — even while filming: “This desire for sex . . . it’s starting to interfere with work.
“The film crews are largely male, so I’m surrounded by men all day and this is playing hell with my current sexual frustration. It’s not good; you can’t mix business and pleasure. I’m the only woman in my department and I want to be taken seriously on the film floor.”
