A rucksack containing £265,000 of jewellery has been stolen from an oriental businessman at a London railway station. British Transport Police have released a CCTV picture of a man wanted in connection with the theft at Euston station at 6.45pm on Thursday.
The lime-green rucksack was taken in the food court. Police are appealing for information about the wanted man, who left through an exit leading to the bus station. Detective Constable Mike Ganly said: “We need urgent help to identify this individual.” Anyone with information should ring 0800 405040 or 020-7391 5275.
Teachers injured
Two teachers were attacked by a man with a stun gun outside Ashton Park mixed comprehensive school in Bristol. A male teacher was hit with the weapon and a woman who went to his aid suffered a broken jaw. Police are seeking the attacker, who drove off in a Vauxhall Corsa with tinted windows.
Body discovered
Greek police looking for David Westwell, 54, who went missing after flooding in Crete, have found a body in Almyrida, Chania. Mr Westwell, from Dingle, Co Kerry, in the Republic of Ireland, is thought to have abandoned his car, found on the edge of a ravine, as it was swept away by floodwater.
Jones is the star
The actress and pop star Grace Jones is to visit Cardiff for a world-record gathering of her namesakes. Only Joneses may buy tickets for the event at the Wales Millennium Centre on November 3 — and they will also provide the entertainment. Grace, 58, will follow the operatic soprano Dame Gwyneth.
Lights go out
A Christmas lights fan who has raised more than £55,000 for charity has accepted a three-year Reading County Court ban that will mean only 300 of his 22,000 bulbs will be lit this year. Neighbours in nearby Sonning said that the displays in Vic Moszczynski’s garden wrecked marriages and caused sleepless nights.
Life sentence in Midsomer case
A vengeful former husband has been jailed for at least 30 years after being found guilty at Oxford Crown Court of murdering his former wife’s fourth husband in the village that formed the backdrop to TV whodunnit Midsomer Murders. Allan Kimber, a bus driver, shot dead Gary Morgan, 37, as he got out of his car because he felt cheated by Helen Morgan. He believed she had married him only to clear her debts.
Cricketer’s fraud
Wayne “Ned” Larkins, 52, the former England cricketer, and his partner, Debbie Lines, 53, pleaded guilty at Taunton Crown Court to fraud charges involving forging signatures to gain control of her father’s home, then remortgaging it for £155,049 to buy a home in France. They will be sentenced on January 26.
Drug ‘too costly’
Cancer charities reacted with fury as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) ruled that a drug for myeloma, a bone marrow cancer, was too expensive for NHS use. Velcade (bortezomib) can prolong the lives of myeloma patients, but NICE ruled that was not cost-effective.
Met promotion
The police officer in charge of the loans-for-peerages inquiry has been promoted. John Yates, 47, will move from Deputy Assistant to Assistant Commissioner, The Times understands. His move comes despite efforts by senior politicians to end the inquiry which is expected to include an interview with Tony Blair.
Court guard jailed
A security guard at the Old Bailey was jailed for two and a half years at Southwark Crown Court after police discovered that he was an illegal immigrant. Layi Bamidele, 56, a Nigerian, had twice been deported and had a string of fraud convictions. He had a false identity based on a fake birth certificate.
TV star taken ill
Trinny Woodall, the TV presenter, has been told to rest after being taken ill. Woodall, 41, was flying back to Britain from a promotional trip to New York with screen partner Susannah Constantine when she complained of dizziness and nausea. Woodall had suffered from bronchitis before the trip, a spokeswoman said.
Orchards at risk
Orchards are so rare that they should be given special protection by the Government, the National Trust has urged. There are 71,000 acres (28,750 ha) of orchards left in Britain, making them rarer than lowland heath, which is classified as being under threat. Sixty per cent of orchards have been lost since 1950.
