Hoping for a better salary despite the economic slump, Cain Jones decided to apply for a job in the Army.
“I think it will give me that guidance to get up on time and eat regularly; disciplinary skills that are for life,” said Mr Jones, 20, from East London, who works at a cinema in Leicester Square. “I want stability for the future.”
He continued: “The job I have now has a fairly low pay. The Army will pay so much more. I have tried to look out for other work but there is nothing at all . . . especially recently.”
Mr Jones, who has three GCSEs and formal training in painting and decorating, computers and security, applied to join the Armed Forces a couple of years ago but pulled out for personal reasons.
This time he is determined to succeed. “I have seen the lifestyle soldiers live and that’s what I want. I like to meet new people,” he said. “I think I would be OK with [deploying to Afghanistan]. I don’t think it would scare me.”
“You need a driving licence, so I can learn that, which would be great. It is very easy to move up to command your own group of people. It is more out in the field in the heart of it.”
Mr Jones, who wants to become an artilleryman, aims to begin after he turns 21 this month. “I want to enjoy my birthday and then start a new life.”
