Senior officers believe associates of three Asians, jailed for life last week for the murder of Kriss Donald, 15, blew up a BMW in the car park of the family’s cash-and-carry business.
The attack took place five days before the men were brought back to Britain from Pakistan, and the BMW was similar to the one owned by Sarwar’s eldest son, Athif, 28.
An earlier plot to kidnap the MP’s youngest son, Anas, 23, was foiled by detectives, and anonymous death threats were routinely made to the MP’s home and mobile phone. His constituency office in south Glasgow was vandalised.
Sarwar, the MP for Glasgow Central, was instrumental in bringing the killers to justice. The men fled to Pakistan, which has no extradition agreement with Britain, after the murder in March 2004.
Sarwar travelled to Pakistan four times, where he met the president and interior minister to press for their return. The fugitives were arrested and agreed to face trial in Scotland for murder.
Donald, from Glasgow, was abducted in broad daylight by the men, who were seeking revenge for an assault by white youths in a nightclub. The schoolboy, targeted because of the colour of his skin, was stabbed 13 times, doused in petrol and set alight. His charred remains were found near the River Clyde.
Imran Shahid, 29, his brother Zeeshan, 28, and Mohammed Faisal Mushtaq, 27, were found guilty of racially aggravated abduction and murder at the High Court in Edinburgh. The judge said that all three must serve more than 20 years in prison before they could be considered for release.
Donald was snatched by five men as he walked near his home in Pollokshields, Glasgow.
The fourth member of the gang, Daanish Zahid, 20, was jailed at an earlier trial in November 2004. He must serve at least 17 years in jail. Zahid Mohammed, 22, the fifth man was jailed for five years for abduction.
