Yohane Banda, 32, married Flora Kamanga, who is three months pregnant, in a civil ceremony in his village of Lipunga in Malawi on Friday. They hope that baby David, the adopted child, will have the chance to meet his new half-sibling.
“I know his new mum will be bringing him [David] back home from time to time to know his growing family,” said Banda. “I understand Madonna has enrolled him in an expensive nursery and although I am poor, I still want the best for my son and God brought us Madonna. I am thankful to this woman.”
Madonna flew to Malawi last month and chose David from the Home of Hope orphanage from a shortlist of seven children. Human rights groups have questioned the legality of the adoption.
The revelation that 14-month-old David will soon have a half-brother or sister in Malawi — as well as a stepmother — will fuel growing concerns about Madonna’s decision to adopt him. It has already emerged that the singer was unaware of Banda’s close relationship with his son.
Banda, who makes £25 a month from a modest tomato and onion garden, met Kamanga, from the nearby village of Nobi, in April this year while he was still in mourning for his first wife Marita, who died days after giving birth to David.
His new wife already has a two-year-old child from a previous relationship.
More than 200 family and friends were invited to last week’s civil ceremony. A goat and some chickens were slaughtered and the celebrations and feasting went on into the night. The couple intend to have a church service after the baby is born.
