The 73-year-old conceptual artist unveiled a replica of the installation, Apple, which features a green apple sitting on a transparent plinth.
Lennon bit the original 40 years ago this month at the Indica Gallery in London. Ono was furious. “I was thinking that the sculpture would organically change and gradually deteriorate,” she said yesterday. She added: “I was very upset. John could see it on my face and he put the apple back on the stand. It was very sweet of him.” Lennon apologised.
Now the gallery has been recreated in Riflemaker, a former gunshop turned exhibition space in Soho. “This is an exact simulation of the original Apple,” Ono said.
“I liked the idea of just putting an apple there as a sculpture that keeps on growing and changing. Eventually it will decay, the seeds will fly away and become an apple tree.”
Ono is also exhibiting new works called Add Colour Paintings — white panels that visitors can finish with the paints and brushes provided.
Her work is being shown alongside pieces by her 1960s contemporaries and by several new artists. Indica was open from 1965-1967 in Mason’s Yard, Mayfair.
The exhibition is open until February 12.
