It is believed that one of the dogs pulled the baby from her cot in the pub’s living quarters and dragged her on to the roof.
Witnesses described last night how passers-by watched helplessly from the street as the rottweilers — used as guard dogs — mauled the girl’s face.
One neighbour said that it was a ferocious attack. “It doesn’t bear thinking about. If that was my baby I’d want the animals destroyed, in fact I’d want to do it myself.”
Police and ambulance crews were called to the pub in Leicester shortly before 4pm on Saturday, but arrived too late to save her.
The girl died after arriving at Leicester Royal Infirmary. The dogs were destroyed last night. Flowers and teddy bears were left in the doorway of The Rocket pub on the New Parks estate in the city, which remained closed.
The pub’s landlords, Wayne and Lesley Glaze, are thought to have been away on holiday at the time of the attack and Mrs Glaze’s son, Lee, and his partner, Amy, had taken temporary charge of the pub.
Friends of the couple said last night that their daughter Caydee-Lee was the victim of the attack, although police refused to confirm this.
Neighbours said that the Glaze’s dogs, Bess and Bruno, were a familiar sight, prowling the roof of the building to discourage burglars.
One mother, Amy Grimbley, said: “Most adults are terrified of them, never mind kids. I’ve got a three-year-old and I don’t feel at all safe walking past them.
“The dogs are known to be vicious. They are guard dogs. They stay on the roof during the day and whenever you walk past you get the feeling they could just jump down and attack you.
“They are very aggressive. Everybody around here is petrified of them. The dogs were never allowed in the pub; they were kept upstairs in the living quarters.”
Nathan Newitt, 16, who works collecting glasses at the pub, said: “No one can believe what has happened. It’s completely out of the blue. Bruno and Bess are more like guard dogs than pets, and I didn’t have much contact with them. But there has never been a problem before.”
Jill Downs, 50, who lives near by, added: “I felt sick when I heard. I have grandchildren of my own and can’t imagine how the family must feel. What happened is just dreadful. I feel so sorry for the family.”
A spokesman for Leicestershire Constabulary said: “Police and ambulance personnel were called to the scene of the attack at living premises at The Rocket public house.
“The five-month-old girl was rushed to Leicester Royal Infirmary but tragically died of her injuries. The rottweiler dogs were removed from the scene by police. Officers are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.”
A post-mortem examination will be carried out.
The attack is the latest in a series of similar incidents. This month Andy Gregory, the former Great Britain rugby league scrum half, was attacked in his local park by a 12-stone rottweiler and suffered two deep puncture wounds.
Five weeks ago a four-year-old boy needed 200 stitches in his face after being attacked by an American bulldog while playing near his home in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. A neighbour was able to drag the dog away.
