Church is told to promote its women priests to halt decline

SWINDON Women priests will be the salvation of the Church of England if bishops stop discriminating against them by dumping them in rural parishes with few worshippers, according to research published today.

A report funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, based in Swindon, says that women will stop the Church sinking and that they have already had a “significant impact” on its survival.

But, more than 12 years after the first women were ordained in Bristol, the “plum jobs” are still going to men and the biggest evangelical churches are run along patriarchal, biblical lines with women passed over for ordained, headship roles, according to research carried out by David Voas, of the University of Manchester’s school of social sciences.

Women priests were also found to earn, on average, less than their male colleagues, mainly because most go into voluntary, “non-stipendiary” posts, or serve as unpaid “ordained local ministers”.
