A Royal Marine was killed in southern Afghanistan today during an operation to drive Taleban fighters out of a district which had been under attack by the insurgents in recent days.

During the operation involving British and Afghan troops, two members of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines were injured, and one of them later died of his wounds.

The other marine was described as being in a stable condition after undergoing surgery at a hospital in Camp Bastion, the main British base in Helmand.

The battle with the Taleban took place on the outskirts of the town of Garmser in Helmand province. The Taleban have been launching attacks on the town, and British commanders decided to take them on. The operation is continuing tonight.

Confrontations with the Taleban have eased off in recent weeks. However, the Royal Marines who took over responsibility for Helmand province from 16 Air Assault Brigade in October, have faced several attacks by insurgents. A Royal Marine was killed on October 19.

Today's death brings the total number of fatalities in Afghanistan this year to 37, of which 18 died in combat.

Brigadier Jerry Thoman, commander of the UK Task Force in Helmand, said: "The thoughts and prayers of all the servicemen and women here are with the family and friends of the Royal Marine who lost his life today."

He added: "Like all the members of the task force, those involved in today's operation have carried out their jobs with professionalism, dedication and bravery."

Next of kin are being informed, the Ministry of Defence said.
