Many police dogs come to forces when they are puppies and they can come from members of the public or be specially bred for the force.
When they are between 12-18 months each dog will undergo 13 weeks of intensive training at a cost of of £9,1000.
Often the dog will live with the handler who will also undertake other police duties alongside his specialist role.
If he is attending, for example, a domestic incident where a dog is not needed, the animal will be left in the car.
Police cars can be fitted with a “run-lock” that allows the engine to idle with the doors locked, allowing the air conditioning to remain on.
Most police dog handlers are constables or sergeants and must be relatively experienced officers.
They will get an allowance for the off-duty care of the dog - including keeping a clean kennel - and would be expected to exercise the animals on their days off.
All the vets bills will be met by the force.
When it is time for the dog to retire many forces give the officer the first choice on whether they want to keep the dog.
If not the animal will be sent to live with a farmer or work with a game-keeper. Some are put down as they are unsuitable for rehousing.
