Corby: the town that suffered a jobs disaster and was then reborn

For much of the 20th century, Corby’s steelworks was one of Britain’s largest. People flooded in from across the country to work there and the town thrived on the industry. That all changed in 1980 when British Steel decided to close its plant and thousands were made redundant.

However, in one of the few successful transformations of a dying industrial town, the site was quickly redeveloped. With the help of EU grants, new industry such as information technology was attracted to the area. Within 15 months of the closure, 15,000 jobs were created by 1,500 new businesses occupying 1.5 million square feet of new business units. Public-private partnerships developed projects worth more than a quarter of a billion pounds. By 1991 unemployment was back to the national average.

The town has been said to epitomise the transformation of former industrial towns envisaged by Margaret Thatcher.
