Muslims in Britain are the most anti-Western of the leading countries in Europe, according to an international opinion survey. A majority of British Muslims associated Westerners with a string of negative ethical traits, including selfishness, arrogance, greed, immorality and violence, it found. One in five of those questioned backed suicide bombings in certain circumstances. Pew Global Attitudes Project contacted 902 British adults, of whom 412 were Muslims, by telephone in a survey of 14,000 people in 13 countries.
Laughing rapist
A rapist with a violent past who laughed as he bit chunks of flesh from his victim’s cheek, ear and nose was jailed for life and told that he must serve at least 12 years. Andrew Wild, 40, attacked a woman aged 38 on a barge at Uppermill, near Oldham, two months after being freed from prison on licence and while still wearing an electronic tag.
BT's 'adult' TV
BT is planning to make soft porn films available on its television service, which begins in the autumn. “Adult entertainment” was expected to be included on its BT Vision service in response to demand, the company said. It added that any content would comply with regulators’ rules and its own taste and decency standards.
Hunt appeal fails
The Countryside Alliance is to take its case to the Lords after the Court of Appeal decided the hunting ban did not breach the European Convention on Human Rights and EU trading and employment laws. Hunt supporters have raised more than £2 million for their legal battle but the RSPCA urged them to accept the ban on fox and deer hunting.
Nail slasher jailed
A man who filed a fingernail into a weapon was jailed for two years for slashing a fellow student’s throat. António Vincente Cristóvão, 26, an asylum-seeker, dug the nail into José Miguel, 24, at the College of Further Education, Plymouth, in an apparent voodoo-style attack. Plymouth Crown Court said Cristóvão should be deported to Angola.
Shotgun wife to serve 16 years
A wife who claimed that she shot dead her husband accidentally while dancing with a shotgun during a sex game was jailed for life for murder and told she must serve at least 16 years.
Linda West, 49, told Winchester Crown Court that she was drunkenly dancing to the Shania Twain song Man! I Feel Like A Woman at their flat in Southampton when she slammed the double-barrel weapon on to the floor and shot her husband, Greg, in the chest. The 45-year-old marine engineer died instantly.
