Yesterday was the 100th time that the small Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett has fallen silent as the bodies of servicemen killed in Afghanistan passed along the High Street.
The silences — this time for Rifleman Andrew Fentiman, 23, of 7th Battalion The Rifles, and Corporal Loren Marlton-Thomas, 28, of 33 Engineer Regiment — began in 2007, when repatriation flights were diverted to nearby RAF Lyneham because RAF Brize Norton had closed for runway repairs.
They will end in 2011, when RAF Lyneham is due to close. They began with ex-servicemen saluting the coffins on their way to John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford. Now they attract world media attention, with coaches and TV trucks lining the High Street.
Corporal Marlton-Thomas’s cousin, Lieutenant Colonel James Rutter, 53, of the Army Air Corps, said: “That it is the 100th is quite terrible in its own way, but we are so grateful to the people of Wootton Bassett for being so faithful and coming out.”
