The case against the banker Ian Gilbert, charged with multiple rapes and indecent assault, is to be reviewed after his chess prodigy daughter was found dead in an apparent suicide last week.
Lawyers at the Crown Prosecution Service said that they would be "carefully considering their position" after the media coverage surrounding Jessie Gilbert’s death. Her body was found outside the Labe Hotel in the Czech Republic after falling from her eighth-floor hotel room on Wednesday.
Jesse had reportedly been tormented by the imminent criminal case involving her father. Friends told Czech police that there were problems within her family and that she had tried to harm herself before.
Mr Gilbert, 48, who works for the Royal Bank of Scotland, faces trial next month at Guildford Crown Court on seven counts of rape and two of indecent assault.
It is understood the charges relate to more than one victim and unconfirmed reports say that she was one of them.
Ms Gilbert, 19, from Croydon, Surrey, had been taking part in the Czech Open Chess Championship during her gap year, and was due to study medicine at Oxford.
Today a spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: "We keep our cases under constant review and after recent events and the following media coverage we will carefully consider our position."
Media reports have suggested that Mr Gilbert, who has remarried, was not at his home in Hackney, East London, where he lives with his second wife. But Surrey police say that they are not looking for him.
His company said that he had been given compassionate leave after his daughter was found dead. His solicitor refused to comment today and would not say if they knew where he was.
Ms Gilbert, who has three sisters, was competing in the Czech Open in Pardubice, the biggest chess tournament in Europe, and closing in on the ranking points that would have enabled her to realise a long-cherished ambition of becoming a Women’s International Master.
Her body was found outside the hotel at about 4.30am on Wednesday. Ms Gilbert studied at Croydon High School and began playing chess when she was 8. She won the Women’s World Amateur Championship when 11, beating adult players to became the youngest British winner.
Against opposition from 13 countries, she also won the Women’s World Chess Federation Master title.
Since she was 12, Miss Gilbert had represented England every year at World or European Girls’ Championships and, in 2001, won the bronze medal in the European Girls' Under-14 Championship.
This year she represented England at the World Chess Olympiad in Turin and was the eighth ranked English female player.
