Second 'General Strike' walkout

Hundreds of schools, libraries and day centres across England will close tomorrow when as many as 1.5 million council workers strike over pensions.

Staff manning the Thames Barrier, the Mersey Ferry, the Humber Bridge, the Newcastle Metro and other transport links are also involved in the 24-hour walkout. Refuse collection will be affected and probation staff and some police support workers are expected to join in. Unions say that they will not provide critical cover.

Unison and the T&G are among 11 unions involved in the action, billed as the biggest national walkout since the General Strike in 1926. There will be rallies and demonstrations in many cities.

The dispute concerns local government pension rights. Current workers in other public sector groups can retire at 60 with a full pension but from this year council staff will be expected to work until they are 65 for similar benefits.
