There is no room in the website tribute, which records all the important events in the Queen’s life in every decade since her birth in 1926, for a photograph of the Duchess of Cornwall, who married the Prince of Wales last year.
There is a further omission in the chronicle of significant events, worldwide and royal, that accompanies each decade.
While the second marriage of the Prince of Wales does not merit a mention in the significant events of the decade that began in 2000, pride of place is given to the two gold medals that Dame Kelly Holmes won at the 2004 Olympic Games.
The Queen has also included a photograph of the Duchess of York, despite the embarrassment her antics caused the Royal Family over the years.
Buckingham Palace has included three photographs of the Princess, who has in effect been airbrushed out by the Windsors since her death in 1997.
After the marriage of the Waleses ended in 1996 the Queen removed the HRH title from Diana. The Duchess of York was also stripped of her title on her divorce.
The first image of the Princess of Wales in the website tribute is at the christening of Prince Harry in 1984 under the heading: “Family Photograph Album, a Gallery of Images from the Queen’s Family.”
In the second photograph, taken in 1989, a smiling Princess, in a wide-brimmed hat, dominates the balcony scene at Buckingham Palace watching the flypast after the Trooping the Colour. The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and Princes William and Harry are by her side.
In 1994 there is a picture of the Princess, who by this time had been separated from her husband for two years, leaving St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham on Christmas Day with the Queen, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.
The final image is of the Queen and the Queen Mother on the steps of Westminster Abbey after the funeral service for the Princess.
A courtier said: “In two decades of her reign Diana was a huge and and important part of the Royal Family. She is also the mother of two of the Queen’s grandchildren which is why she is represented.”
The Duchess of York is pictured at the christening of her daughter, Princess Eugenie, in 1990.
The website, which includes previously unseen photographs, records the big events of the Queen’s life.
The 1930s includes the Abdication; the 1940s, victory in the Second World War; the 1950s, the wedding of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco; the 1960s, the Beatles receiving their MBE insignia at Buckingham Palace. The 1970s records Princess Anne representing the Britain at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
In the 1980s the highlight is: “The Royal wedding. Prince Charles marries Lady Diana Spencer in July 1981. The event draws a global television audience of 700 million.” The photograph chosen is the famous image of the couple’s kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
The 1990s includes an aerial shot of the funeral of the Princess and shows the vast crowds that lined the streets in silent tribute.
For the decade beginning 2000, the events chronicled by Buckingham Palace include the Golden Jubilee, the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother, war in Iraq, London winning the 2012 Olympics, the bombings on the London Underground, and gold for Dame Kelly.
The restoration of Diana to the Queen’s family album will delight her sons William and Harry, and millions of her admirers in Britain who feel that she was too hastily excised from the Royal Family’s history books.
At Kensington Palace, Diana’s name was virtually erased soon after her death. On the public tours of Buckingham Palace’s State Rooms, there is not one mention of the mother of the future King. The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain has been a public relations fiasco.
