Police staff ‘touted nude images’

Two civilian police workers are accused of taking CCTV pictures of naked people involved an artist’s photoshoot and trying to sell them.

Northumbria Police are to suspend them while it investigates “possible misuse of CCTV footage” from the banks of the River Tyne on July 17 last year. On that morning Spencer Tunick, the New York-based photographic artist, had assembled about 1,700 volunteers for his latest “installation”.

They took off their clothes and lay in rows on the Millennium Bridge, on the Newcastle quayside and outside the Sage Music Centre in Gateshead. Tunick had previously organised the world’s largest nude photoshoot of 7,000 subjects in Barcelona.

Another 4,000 had taken their clothes off for his lens in Melbourne. Many of those lying before him on Tyneside had travelled from all over the world. It is alleged that two police employees used the zoom lenses on the CCTV cameras to take close-ups of subjects and touted the images in pubs in the Tyneside area.
