Doctors accused of MMR jab fiddle

DOCTORS are not registering children whose parents do not want them to have the combined MMR vaccine so that they do not lose government funding.

A surgery that inoculates 70 per cent of two-year-olds with the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, receives an extra £955 a year, rising to £2,865 if 90 per cent of eligible children are vaccinated. Faced with losing that money because of concerns over the safety of the injection, GPs are delaying registering children whose parents do not want it.

They insist that they are still treating the children and that the “administrative fiddle”, which is condemned by the British Medical Association, is not putting their health a risk.

“I am aware of doctors who have done this and my guess is that it is widespread,” Dr David Jenner, a GP in Devon said. “Most doctors will treat the patients but find a fiddle not to register them.”
