His rucksack bomb abandoned, the man described by prosecutors as the fifth July 21 bomber took a bus through a nervous London to the Trocadero, an amusement arcade, a court heard today.
Jurors at Woolwich Crown Court watched CCTV footage of Manfo Kwaku Asiedu in the hours after he allegedly "lost his nerve" and failed to join the other four men accused of trying to detonate bombs on London's transport network on July 21, 2005. He appeared relaxed, walking around Piccadilly Circus.
Just before 1.30pm, as news of the apparent attempt to attack three trains and a bus spread across the capital, footage showed Mr Asiedu boarding a Number 94 bus on Goldhawk Road, in West London, a police cordon visible in the background.
As prosecutors explained today, the cordon was set up around Shepherd's Bush tube station, where Hussain Osman, one of Mr Asiedu's alleged co-conspirators, is accused of trying to blow himself up.
But Mr Asiedu, who is accused of dumping his own bomb near Little Wormwood Scrubs, not far from Shepherd's Bush, appeared unconcerned, boarding the bus with a rucksack. He then spent 70 minutes on the bus as it made its way into central London, the court heard, getting off near Oxford Circus at 2.50pm.
From here, Mr Asiedu, who told detectives during his interrogation that he attended mosque, smoked some cannabis and played basketball in a park on the afternoon of the alleged attacks, was seen making his way to Funland, the amusement arcade in the Trocadero Centre.
Inside, wearing a baseball cap back to front and still carrying his rucksack, Mr Asiedu was seen wandering among arcade machines and mingling with tourists until he was stopped by two security staff, who asked to look in his bag. Then he left.
Once outside, Mr Asiedu, 33, was seen again by cameras walking along Coventry Street, Rupert Street and towards Piccadilly Circus, stopping at one point to sit on the pavement, the court was told.
Mr Asiedu, of no fixed address, presented himself to police five days after the alleged attacks and claimed not to know any of his five co-defendants. Along with Mr Osman, 28, of no fixed address; Muktar Said Ibrahim, 29, of Stoke Newington, north London; Yassin Omar, 26, from New Southgate, north London; Ramzi Mohammed, 25, of North Kensington, west London; and Adel Yahya, 24, of High Road, Tottenham, north London, he denies charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life.
The trial continues.
