A 14-year-old girl has been arrested and a murder investigation launched following the death of a teenage girl in West Yorkshire.

The 16-year-old was found late last night with serious injuries at a home in Halifax but later died in hospital. She is believed to have been stabbed. The girl who was arrested was also taken to hospital.

“Police were called just before 11pm last night to a report of a 16-year-old woman with serious injuries at an address in the Ovenden area of Halifax. The 16-year-old was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital but later died of her injuries.

“A 14-year-old female who was also detained at Calderdale Royal Hospital has been arrested in connection with this incident. A murder inquiry is now under way.”

The spokesman said inquiries were continuing, adding that the 14-year-old was thought to be in a stable condition.

This morning a lone police officer stood watch outside a two-storey terraced house on a street in Ovenden.

A police cordon was stretched across the front yard of the house and the curtains were closed.

Lisa Comer, 36, who lives across the road, said the woman who lived in the house with her partner had three daughters. She said: “She keeps herself to herself, you don’t hear anything from them.”

She said the daughters were very quiet and did not play out in the street with anybody else. As far as she knew, they had never been in trouble.

Ian Helliwell, 60, who lives two doors down, said he did not know the family but it was a quiet area. He added that he saw a police car arrive at the house at about 11pm last night.
