Emergency services are called after an all-night party at the Essex home of the comedian Michael Barrymore, and discover a body in the swimming pool. The man is pronounced dead and identified as Stuart Lubbock, 31
October 2001:
Following the police inquiry into Lubbock's death, Barrymore is given a caution for drugs offences and for allowing cannabis to be smoked in his home. No further charges are brought against the presenter
September 2002:
Medical experts tell an inquest into Lubbock's death that he had suffered severe internal injuries, suggesting he may have suffered a serious sexual assault. Cocaine, ecstasy and alcohol were found in his system. An open verdict is recorded

ITV announces it has no further plans to commission shows from the comedian. Mr Barrymore had been on a £2million contract with the channel to present several shows, including Strike it Lucky
December 2003:
After an abortive comeback attempt, the entertainer leaves the UK to live in New Zealand with his partner, Shaun Davis
May 2004:
Mr Barrymore reveals that he filed for voluntary bankruptcy in the UK because of a large overdue tax demand
January 2006:
The comedian appears as a Celebrity Big Brother housemate on Channel 4. He finishes runner up after surviving a series of public votes
February 2006:
Mr Lubbock's family fail in an attempt to launch a private prosecution against Mr Barrymore, after a district judge in Southend rules there is insufficient evidence. Four of the allegations made by Mr Lubbock's family relate to the misuse of drugs, one to alleged drunk and disorderly behaviour, and one to alleged assault
December 2006:
Police reopen the investigation into Mr Lubbock's death
June 14, 2007:
Police arrest three people, including Mr Barrymore, on suspicion of murdering Mr Lubbock.
