BRITAIN was last night put on its highest state of security alert after an attempted car firebombing at Glasgow airport raised fears of a new wave of terrorist attacks.
Gordon Brown placed the country on a “critical” threat level, indicating that MI5 believes a terrorist attack is expected “imminently”.
In yesterday’s attack in Glasgow, two Asian-looking men crashed a car into the airport’s main terminal building. Police are linking it to the failed car bomb attack in London’s West End early on Friday morning.
Two men were arrested at the airport. Early this morning antiterrorist police announced they had arrested two further people in Cheshire in connection with the attack.
In a televised statement from Downing Street last night, Brown said there would be heightened security at airports and other crowded places. “The first duty of the government is the security and safety of all the British people. So it is right to raise the levels at airports and other crowded places in light of the threat.
“I want all people to be vigilant and support police in light of the difficult decisions they have to make. I know the British people will stand together, united, resolute and strong.”
It is understood deployment of troops is also being considered at airports, where authorities yesterday increased security within hours of the Glasgow attack. Tighter security is also expected at today’s tribute concert for Princess Diana at Wembley organised by her sons.
In Glasgow, witnesses described how the two men drove the four-wheel-drive vehicle into the doors of the airport’s main terminal building. One of the men got out of the Jeep Cherokee with his clothes on fire. He was restrained by passengers while others put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Eyewitness Jackie Kennedy, 46, described how she watched one of the occupants of the car douse himself in petrol and set himself alight.
“He had a big smirk on his face. He lifted up what appeared to be a five-litre drum, which I think had petrol in it, and set himself on fire. His clothes were melting in front of my very eyes.
“The police tried to pounce on him but he fought back and was struggling with them. It was only when a member of the public punched him in the face that the police managed to restrain him. The police were trying to spray CS gas in his face but it was not working.”
On arrival at the Royal Alexandra hospital in Paisley police said he was found to be wearing a “suspect device” – thought to be a suicide belt. The casualty ward was evacuated and hospital workers reported seeing a policeman run from the building and throw a “belt-like” object into a cricket field.
Late last night the Jeep Cherokee used in the attack had still not been forensically examined and its condition was described as ‘highly unstable.’
William Rae, chief constable of Strathclyde police, said they believed it contained inflammable material.
One witness said bottles of petrol had been shaken inside the vehicle in a bid to set it alight. “It looked like Molotov cocktails,” he said.
Rae admitted he could not rule out the vehicle might contain the remains of a third attacker.
Glasgow airport remained closed last night and more than 1,000 passengers who had been due to depart were held on aircraft on the tarmac for more than six hours before being taken away in buses to the city’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre to spend the night.
Liverpool John Lennon airport was also closed last night while police examined a suspect car and all airports in the country stopped motorists using kerb-side drop-off zones to leave and collect passengers.
Two men were arrested at the scene of the Glasgow attack and one was said to be in a critical condition with severe burns.
Within hours of the attack Brown convened a meeting of Cobra, the government’s emergency response committee, to assess the implications. It followed a meeting earlier in the day to discuss the attempted car bombings in the West End.
There, two Mercedes cars were packed with gas cylinders, petrol and nails and primed to detonate within 200 yards of each other as nightclubs emptied onto the streets. Experts say the bombs were designed to create a huge fireball.
Jacqui Smith, the new home secretary, confirmed the raised security alert was “in response to the events of the last 48 hours”. It was last at “critical” last August after the foiled airline bomb plots.
Rae said members of SO15, the Met’s counter-terrorism unit, travelled to Scotland last night to help with the investigation. “We believe the incident at Glasgow airport is linked to the events in London,” he said. “There are very similar features to both incidents and we are able to link both incidents. We can confirm that this is being treated as a terrorist incident.”
He said no advance intelligence had been received about the attempt although ABC News quoted an unnamed American law enforcement officer claiming US officials had received intelligence reports two weeks ago warning of a possible terror attack in Glasgow against “airport infrastructure or aircraft”.
The Yard declined to comment on reports that it had managed to identify three possible suspects in the West End attack.
Well-placed security sources said the Met and MI5 had called in armed surveillance teams from the army’s Special Reconnaissance Regiment to help track down the car bomb suspects. The same unit, along with armed surveillance officers from the Met’s Counter-Terrorist Command (CTC), was involved in a hunt for five alleged would-be suicide bombers.
The Ministry of Defence declined to comment on reports that the regiment and the SAS, which now has a forward base in west London, had been called in to help with the police manhunt.
A senior Whitehall official did say, however, that police hoped for an early breakthrough. “It’s promising. We are on the trail. They [the CTC] are confident they will get to the bottom of it.” The consensus among senior law enforcement officials was that the West End attack bore the hall-marks of an Islamist terror attack directed by “core Al-Qaeda” figures in Pakistan.
Mayor Ken Livingstone urged Londoners to remain vigilant. “The discovery of two potential car bombs in central London, with those responsible still at large, means we face a very real terrorist threat,” he said.
Sources suggested the government was likely to use the latest attacks as an opportunity to impose tougher control orders on those terror suspects it has been unable to jail because of a lack of evidence admissible in court.
Seven of the 17 people so far placed on control orders have absconded in recent months. They include a suspect who was previously said to have been interested in carrying out a car bomb attack against a London night-club. The tougher controls would include longer curfews and police guards on suspects’ homes.

can we really still have the olympics here in the wake of these terrorist attacks .

This is what we get by having such liberal immigration policies. This is only the tip of the iceburg. If you want to let these people come then be prepared to change your lifestyle and be looking over your shoulder at every turn.
Dave, Riverside, USA
I am so very sorry that your country and it's wonderful people have to endure this . These cowards have no respect for life; this is battle to save our culture.and our way of life. When seeing the films on our cable news, seeing streets I've walked down and places I have visited in your country, it's hard not to be mortified. Then anger hits; how dare they.God bless your loving people and God save the Queen. Continue to be the brave people you are..

Ben, Glasgow,
As a British Muslim, I am appalled at the goings on of the last two days.. We are being marginalizaed by the actions of a moronic few who seem to have lost all semblence of reason. I see the incident at Glasgow and think, "what can possibly be achieved by dousing yourself in petrol and ramming a terminal building?" There is no logic to the incident. I hope that the incident is not terrorist related and pray that we don't have any more in the pipeline.

G. deighton, london, uk
From what i can see, despite the long-standing relationship with the america, the UK has not learned much about how to dramitise the events in a way to outrage the public. They should get lessons from their american counterparts as to how to make things seem exist when in fact they don't. I am really really dissapointed. The aim behind all this is clear; to get the public approval to pass laws that are against the human rights which the HOUSE of Lord has so far rejected.
thomas, London,
The security services have some explaining to do.
It is extrordinary that the Glasgow branch of Comet is better protected against RAM RAIDERS than it's international airport.
G J BUNTON, SLOUGH, BERKSHIRE
This item is in chapter News/UK/Crime.
Articles dealing with the illegal Iraq war are not located in this chapter. This war, which did not abide by international law, has caused more than six hundred thousand civilian deaths. Does that mean it is beyond the scope of crime ?
François SZYLOWICZ, Tours, France
On a lighter note, I am Glaswegian by my roots and I note that the chief suspect was subdued not by the various police present but by a passer-by wading in keenly and punching the smouldering terrorist repeatedly in the face. That's the Gorbals spirit! As Churchill said: "What a country..."
Geordie Kidston, London, United Kingdom
And finally Iraq arrives in the UK. The consequences of an illegal war finally catches up with us, sadly only after Blair has bolted. This coupled with a porous immigration policy not that we have one and a multicultural illusion which does not work and there we have a grim future for the UK. If the publics safety had been at the forefront of the Governments mind then we would have never entered an illegal war. I just hope I can save enough cash to get out before it all turns really sour.
stuart, london,
What an awful headline. This will keep the tourists away. Instil the fear in our population and generally add to the general panic. We cant let them win. What these terrorists want is to cause chaos for us all. Get the airport reopen, keep the tourists coming in and lets keep frequenting those nightclubs, airports etc and stop this insanity.

Brian in Hong Kong writes: What in earth does "two Asian-looking men" mean? Blatant racism should not be allowed in our newspapers.
Well, it does help to know who you're looking for. But in this case I think we could guess the appearance of the perpetrators without any descriptions whatsoever.
Marion, London,
What do you mean two asian looking men is racist. For gods sake!. Lets face it how many al queda suspects are white middle class gentlemen with families, thats right. NONE.
The threat is from Islamic fundamentalists and I for one support deportation of all terror suspects and anyone who has ever visited an afganistan training camp straight to Guantamo Bay, then leave the bar stewards to rot.
We don't need this in the UK. If you don't want help in Iraq then go and fight each other till you are all killed. No waste there.
Mr Angry, Edingburgh, Scotland
GinaB, because it's not a wee airport, it's the busiest in Scotland. It was the first day of the school holidays and it was crammed with people, while attention was elsewhere in Edinburgh and London. I don't agree that stopping immigration is the answer, it is time now for all forms of religious expression to be banned - whether it's headscarves or crucifixes. People can believe whatever they want in private, but so long as their fellow religious are seeking power in this way, they should keep their beliefs to themselves.
Caitriona, Glasgow,
I think your Honda advert on this page: "Hondamentalist" might be seen as a rather unfortunate choice at this time! I would urge you & said advertiser to consider removing it before the proverbial waste matter hits the metal surface at great speed causing mutual embarrassment to you both!
Apart from that, yeah, good paper as always :-)

In the U. S. we are told that the Brits are taking the terrorist attacks in stride because you are used to it. Well, i am very angry and sorry that it is happening over here. I have read your papers and watched the events unfold for two days and will continyue to do so in the hope and confidence that your security bureaus will find those responsible. Peace to all

It's amazing that when terrorists attack Jews in Israel they are grouoed as "militants" but when the British are attacked they are deemed to be "terrorists". It's not easy changing one's spots after 2,000 years of prejudice, is it?
Stan, Sydney, Australia
I am so sad to hear the news. I respect and love Britishi. But I cannot understand why the former government always followed Bush.Is Gordon Brown complaining Tony Blair maybe?
Wafer, Guangzhou, China
I blame the parents.
archie, london,
It's ironic that the Labour Government have done more to damage freedom, democracy and the British way of life using terrorism as an excuse to curtail our liberties than these so called "terrorists" have.
Lets face it, the IRA did far more damage on mainland Britain in the 70's and 80's yet we didn't need to lose a single freedom to solve the situation.
Lets solve this situation by withdrawing from Iraq and Afganistan and apologising to the Muslim world for having allowed Blair to lead us into America's war for oil rights.
I say as soon as Blair finished as middle east envoy we send him to the Hague as a war criminal.
Henry Adams, Manchester,
My first thought (kidding!) was that it was a disgruntled Israeli academic that was responsible but then common sense took over and I realized that currently, radical Muslims seem to have a monopoly on this type of insanity. Unfortunately no amount of appeasement will satisfy a religious fanatic, regardless of which God he/she worships. I am very thankful that two of the attacks were foiled and the third resulted in the capture of the perpretrators. It baffles me that someone could be filled with so much hatred to want to hurt people they don't even know.
Ken Levin, San Francisco, USA
It has long puzzled me why there is no coordinated National Emergency preparedness plan in the U.K.
Such a borderless organisation, which would encompass several services and voluntary groups, all working together could provide aid where needed and a central communication system.
I was part of such a system in both Canada and the United States. It kicked into place during 9/11, Swissair disaster, earthquakes, and other natural and man made disasters. The PEP, (Provincial Emergency plan), coordinates all the emergency services and ensures that communications remain open, between public agencies, volunteer groups, (such as Search & Rescue) and the public at large.
Local Citizens Band radio groups are also part of the loop.
Today, we are dealing with widespread flooding and terrorist attacks in two separate cities. Yet apart from the Cabinet Office Group and JATAC, there does not appear to be any general coordinated group
The public is isolated and rendered impotent..WHY?
Pat Vanderveer, Liverpool, U.K.
Although we do need to be vigilant and the current feeling is one of fear, I do have to agree with another contributor here that the 'attacks' were amateurish in the extreme. Really, it was more keystone-cops than anything else.
As someone who grew up during the height of 'the troubles', it seems that this 'terrorist threat' is little more than the dying throes of a particularly, vicious, yet incompetent and directionless 'death cult.'
Let's all get it into perspective, and try to enjoy the freedoms we have as a society and which seems to act as a red rag to these head-bangers.
This isn't the IRA, or Loyalists, or even ETA, or the PLO - these are demented young men with a murderous rage fuelled by their own inadequacies.
BTW - thought Brown came across well, and has been a revelation in his short period in office.

What does it take to take away a person's citizenship and deport him? Surely things have reached the stage where you need to do much more than just "keep an eye on" potential terrorists. Here in the US we are very liberal about granting citizenship, and I hope we don't get into the type of situation you Brits are in. If you can set up some guidelines, maybe we will follow.
Patricia, Dallas, TX
I am a Brit of Asian descent and am living in US. I am saddened and disgusted by these incidents. Frankly I am unable to understand what motivates these people to commit such heinous crimes against their fellow citizens. Race relations in UK came a long way in the 80s and 90s and today Britain is one of the most tolerant countries in the world. It is very depressing to see how a very small lunatic fringe is undoing the hard work of so many over such a long period of time. I hope that the British people stay strong and united against this scourge much as they did against the IRA.
Zubair Rafi, San Francisco, USA

That all Tour Operators and Airlines will be required to provide details of the full UK Address of every customer's destination accommodation, along with their country of residence. This is in addition to the full completion by each customer of the current Visa Waiver form, on board the aircraft., Customers travelling on fly-drive or flight-only holidays will be asked before they start the check-in process to confirm their full UK address including the Postacode, for the first night of their stay. Customers unable to confirm their address could be denied check-in and aircraft boarding.
A further process for all customers (irrespective of holiday type) will be to confirm their country of residence prior to check-in.

Dear Editor;
I've seen footage of this incident on CNN here in California, and it scares me. I saw what our government went through almost six years ago, which amounted to almost scraping our Constitution.
All we need is the threat of terrorism and we've adopted the Napoleonic Code in the name of safety. My government does not trust me, and they don't even know me. Sounds like you've had to deal with the same thing.
When we had the Rodney King riots here back in '93, he asked a question that may be pertinent now; "Can't we all just get along?"
Well can't we?

This whole situation is going to get worse because religious fanatics in the US, Muslim countries and Israel want to plunge the rest of us headlong into a new religious war. It's all part of the same thing. Unfortunately the secular, enlightnened West has not produced a response to this crisis - which is the reason why Bush push through the war on Iraq and why the troops aren't leaving anytime soon.

"I am grateful to everyone who acted so bravely and with compassion, too. But why the wee airport north but to create a cultural divide internally? "
The cultural divide has been a matter of fact from the get go. All this does is draw attention to the grand failure of this grand cultural diversity experiment. it's time to circle the wagons and protect the UK while we still can.

Why is the world putting up with these zealots.
Why do the authorities treat them with kid gloves.
Whatever happened to deportations and background checks. Why are the perpetrators of terror in the country of my birth brought to justice, real justice, not just a slap on the wrist.
Why can't the TRUE BRIT speak his mind.
Why? Why? Why?
This is a case of closing the barn door after the horse(s) has bolted. Too little, too late. They (religious zealots) now have a foothold and they won't let go easily. The duties of the government are to protect the TRUE BRITS.

I am sick of the goverment and its PC policies! If indeed these torrorists were home grown, its time police were given more powers to search anyone and anything at any time! And without fear of offending anyone. we need to sit down with community leaders and say, " sorry but we dont care who we are upsetting, our nations security is far more inportant!" I live in Paisley about a mile from the airport. If they can strike here, they can and will strike anywhere. Already Ive heard people shouting about the muslim communities as i was walking through Paisley town centre just hours after the reports were heard on the news. I have a young daughter that I dont want to see growing up in a world where people are afraid to go about their everyday lives! The muslim communities need to do more! Much, much more, to root out these sickening few cowards! How on Gods earth can anyone think they can carry out these attacks in Gods name? They bring shame to all islam!
Gareth Farley, Paisley, Renfrewshire
Is it only me or do others think Brown came across as a complete plonker? I do not know the new Home secretary but I think they should let her do the talking so we can see if she is the right person for the job. I fear our troubles are only just beginning. I and millions of other Brits did nothing to cause this situation but we will be the ones asked to sort this mess out.
J Martin, Littleborough, England
It is significant that these events have occurred so close to the change-over form Blair to Brown. I believe they are meant to remind us, that whilst Blair may have been moved on (or sadly allowed to choose the means of his own exit), they will still remember Iraq.
Joe, Geelong, VIC Australia
Is this is a case for the return of capital punishment?
Why do we spend further resources (by treating them in hospital/possible imprisonment) on these "martyrs"; who cause/aim to cause innocent deaths and damage/disruption?
Are they likely to ever be valuable members of our society?
Stephen, Guildford, England
Britain under attack? Isn't that rather sensational, yellow journalism?
I remind readers that, although frightening, the Glasgow and London events saw no one harmed.
That we donât know the whole story. If one judges from the scraps of information coming from Glasgow, these events could be the work of a few people, clearly people who donât quite know what they are doing.
That the last time America went off in a rage about something it didnât understand, we got 650,000 people killed in Iraq.
And that American bombing of the village of Helmand, Afghanistan, has just killed about 80 civilians in their homes. No scares there, just mass murder.

I note that the Muslim leaders in UK are meeting to discuss how to protect their people in the fear of repercussions..They really need to show leadership and publicly expell the extremists from their own community. Then, hopefully they will begin to be seen as assimilating (while keeping their own traditions) and be welcomed as peers by the indiginous population

Why are we still calling this a 'War on Terror'? Terror is just a tool used by people who want something. Who are these people? Why do they want to kill us?
This isn't a war on terror it is a war on religion.

Over the longer term and many only with hindsight will see where the real danger comes from.
The increasingly oppressive and ill thought through measures which are being enacted by the authorities are far greater a danger to our liberal free society than any number of bombs.

When will Britain and the West learn that a "religion" whose main premise is that anyone who doesn't believe in it has the option to convert or die cannot be tolerated in any "Democratic" country. When people evolve sufficiently to learn that all religions are poisoning the planet, the battles will cease, as there will be nothing left to fight over.

English Bob, London,
The question of "extremists" in the UK is limited surely within the radicalising centres already known and resulting in MI5 overseeing a clear section of what is largely the British born Pakistani community. From core suspects to a wider sweep of ancillary contacts, they are largely on the radar. These are exactly those the US seek to vet and bar as they are the most likely to commit acts of terror-this sounds awkward but it is a very practical request, given we nurture the problem. Hopefully the rich trail of evidence here will allow more of a UK response. The depth and breadth of change has been hard to see publically. Root and branch eradication of the radicals will remove any charges of racism. These people seem so amateur that it is nearly impossible to recall just how amateurish the preparations and application of 9/11 were...

Well Now it would seemwe have real prime minister to govern us , with real ideas and a proper cabinet to back him up, with knowledge and wisdom.
Now all we need to increase our safety is The Death Penalty re-introduced for terrorism and a good ID card Scheme to be put into place immediatly.
Surely Terrorism is Treason and that is still covered the death penalty? Are we not on a war footing with these unknown cowards who walk amongst us, so do we not deserve to introduce ID Cards to try and eliminate these people from our society. We managed it during the war , so what is different now??? Listen Mr Brown Take up the challenge and start protecting the people of this country , Let the man in the street , know that if you hunt and catch these people ,they will be eliminated , not put into jail, which we are told are too overcrowded anyway!!. They do not deserve to Live with us.

Having flown out of Glasgow (my home country) to the States on Tuesday of this week, I am shocked at the tenasity of the people who feel the need to continuosly attack innocent people.
If people disagree with the politics of a country why don't they take it to the government of that country? We, who live in democratic nations, know that the people in power are not always in sinc with how the general public feel.
The leaders behind these attacks must know this. They have done their homework with who, where and when. Why don't they explain - truly - why?
