Police carried out a controlled explosion this afternoon on a car outside a Paisley hospital which is treating a man who is still critically ill after yesterday's terror attack on nearby Glasgow airport.
A police spokesman confirmed that the car was believed to be linked to yesterday's airport attack, in which a Jeep Cherokee was rammed into the airport terminal - but he did not say what that link was.
A man believed to be the driver of the Jeep was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley suffering from severe burns after yesterday's incident.
A fifth arrest was made today in the investigation into two failed car bombs in London’s West End and the Glasgow airport attack. The latest arrest came in Liverpool, while Scottish police were searching a house in Glasgow as part of a nationwide operation.
Police are also holding a 27-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man after forcing their car onto the hard shoulder of the M6 in the early hours. In what is rapidly becoming a nationwide operation, it emerged this evening that officers were searching a number of buildings in nearby Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The links between the car bombs in London and attack in Glasgow were strengthened today when gas canisters similar to those found in the cars in London were seen being carried out of the burnt-out Jeep.
Gordon Brown last night raised the terrorist threat level to critical, the highest level, which indicates that MI5 believe a terrorist attack is expected 'imminmently'. Mr Brown said today that the would-be bombers were clearly linked to al-Qaeda.
He urged the public to continue “living their lives as normal”, but admitted: “We can expect that they will use different forms of missile or weapon or different forms of activity, whether it is planes or cars, to inflict damage,” he said.
“It is clear that we are dealing in general terms with people who are associated with al-Qaeda.”
The Government’s emergency response committee, Cobra, was convened at 11.30am today. The meeting was chaired by Jacqui Smith, the new Home Secretary.
Ms Smith used the meeting to thank the police for their extraordinary efforts and hard work and praised the public's refusal to “let anyone prevent us from getting on with our lives”.
Ms Smith encouraged people to remain vigilant and said she would set out the Government's response to the terrorist attacks in a statement to the House of Commons tomorrow.

To the editors:
Why do you repeatedly refuse to print my observation that the current level of Islamic terrorism in Britain is better explained by the historical context of Islam's 1400-year history of imperialist conquest and subjugation of infidels (i.e., jihad) than it is by the so-called "illegal" war in Iraq?
Randall Spaan, Seattle, Washington
What will it take for the public in general to realize
that this is a world war with very dangerous people, and stop criticizing our own governments.
This is no longer about who you favor and who is to blame. This is about them against us,the every day citizens of the world. In closing 'wake up'.
Louis Galterio, scottsdale Arizona, United States
Who knew that everyone except the perpetrators are to blame for these evil acts? You lefties who blame Blair and Bush are going to have to find somebody new to blame soon enough. Brown, Hillary?
R.D. Fisher, Vancouver, CANADA
Thanks Tony, but I would rather they strike at the decision makers.
Dave Madley, Poole, UK
Linda. You seem to be overlooking the fact that we had 30 years of this with the IRA. Unllike Americans we don't run away when the administrattion says 'Boo'. Work out the odds - they are infinitestmal.
Yes, the Sunni and Shi'a are engaged in civil war right now. Whose fault is that?
After 9/11 the US MSM (with the exception of Bill Maher,
were crowing about the cowardice of these people. However misguided, and despite the fact that their deaths would be instantaneous, I don't regard these as cowardly actions.
Certainly, their actions are evil, but I dare you to go to a high bridge, if you have any in Santa Fe, and consider seriously the possiblility of jumping off. I think you'll have a rapid change of heart.
John Annis, London,
I say two thumbs up to your first responders who mitigated what could have been a really tragic incident. Whether the war in Iraq is immoral or not, deal with it. Stay alert and keep your heads up.
Stuart, Corrales, NM, USA
It appears to me that noone dare mention the fact that these incident are rooted in the "religion of peace". What is it about Islam that make certain members behave like we have seen, and what is it about the media, which make them omit the mentioning of the connection between the Quran and terror?
The Observer
Borge Jorgensen, Aarhus, Denmark
The allegation that the medieval religeonists and their murderously stupid bullies (who want us all to believe in Allah and are prepared to kill us if we don't) have some sort of justification for their barbarism defies reason. That Tony Blair and the United Nations who, for once, have actually agreed that getting rid of a brutal dictator was the morally, ethically and politically correct thing to do are therefore responsible for the actions of these demented thugs shows a lack of judgement that is hard to credit.
Dickie , London,
This is a 3-way war and a lot of people are getting stuck in the middle of it. On one side you have Zionists and Christian fundamentalists and on the other side you have different manifestations of Islamic fundamentalism.
Amidst this threesome- there silent majority haven't got a voice. That's the same silent majority who still don't understand why 9/11 happened and who was responsible for it. This silent majority is afraid and politicians from the respective sides are playing this to their advantage.
Alfonso Parelli, London, UK
I demand that an inquiry is held into the desertion of duty of the armed police in Glasgow airport.
Within the rules of engagement that they possess, it is surely their duty to have shot both persons exiting the vehicle at the airport. How did they know that these terrorists did not have a trigger to blow up the 4X4 causing massive damage and casualties?
I consider it a dereliction of duty that there aren't 2 corpses lying in a morgue in Glasgow. Any inquest jury would return a verdict of lawful killing and the the trigger men could retire on their lucrative pension knowing that they had done their duty. As it is, they will retire knowing that they deserted the tax payer in their moment of need and have set in motion an expensive legal process of hearings and trials, where a simple burial and inquest would have sufficed.
jono, Newcastle,
Ranjith, why didn't you explain to her that you were from India, a Hindu nation, and that Pakistan, a Muslim nation, was actually created by the Brits and was one of the stupidest things they ever did?

Ed, London: from where do you get the idea that Iraq was in any way connected to 9/11? Even Bush has admitted this was 'an error'.
And Simon from Nottingham: Because of delays the PanAm plane that crashed on Lockerbie occurred. The whole point of it was that the bomb should have detonated well out into the Atlantic, where it would have disappeared without trace.
I don't mind any of you disagreeing my my attitude or my viewpoint, but if you want to argue the facts then do some reading first. You're just parrotting the nonsense of the mainstream media, and I'm sure you would be much happier watching Big Brother or the latest adventures of Paris Hilton.
John Annis, London,
Yes, great, let's pull out of Iraq and let's do whatever it takes to please the Muslims. Or perhaps pay them so that they don't attack us for a while.
Everything it takes, just please dear Muslims don't get upset with us!
Let's be serious here, the guys are killing us and we don't realy believe that this is our fault or if we behave better they will all of a sudden love us all.
Esteban, San Francisco,
British people can take comfort in the fact that the 'terrorist threat' facing this country is largely clumsy, amateurish and poorly organised by a small bunch of random lunatics who have been pathetically brainwashed. If this is the best that 'Al-Quaeda' - global international terrorists can do then the West has absolutely nothing to worry about as long as we maintain our vigilance and crack down hard on all those suspected of terrorist activity.
Sam, Glasgow,
Heather, has the fact the bombers targeted a night club escaped you? Until the anti war brigade take off the blinkers and see the truth about radical Islam we don't stand a chance of defeating it. It's NOT about Iraq it's about establishing worldwide Islamic domitation.
viv, London, England
I wonder why the car bomb etc. attacks are so frequent in U.K. but not in U.S. or Europe?

"...but anyone with even half a brain knows that these acts would not be happening if it wasn't for our illegal and immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq." John Annis, London
There were unsuccessful attacks prior to the invasion of Iraq. Regardless of your opinion of the invasion, it in no way justifies any terrorist acts in the UK.
Nick, Brighton, UK,
Glasgow was a desperate act by desperate extremists who do not value life or God's work. They bring the majority of peaceful Muslims into disrepute and look to divide our nation through force and hatred.
All religions that believe in God will say these selfish acts are not in God's name, whatever these terrorists pretend or say publically.
Such acts should unite us even more closely as a nation to foil these murderers, who have kiled more of their own Muslim brothers and sisters in Iraq than any western nations, whatever the rights and wrongs politically we share, their crimes against God and humanity are the worst by far and should be condemned as such.
Sam Redman, London, UK
Lynne. More right-wing rhetoric. If you're looking for a reason, don't look at these silly rationales. Look at the United States building huge bases in Saudi Arabia. bin Laden said years ago that it was an affront for Americans to be in the most holy of countries in the Umma.
OK, it was far too late by the time you did this, but nonetheless if the US and the UK hadn't launched the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq all this BS wouldn't be happening now. And don't overlook the fact that the overwhelming majority of insurgents just want us the hell out of the place.
Try reading some news and Op/Eds not written by the MSM, and you'll find a very different story.
And yes, myself - and millions of other Brits - are furious with our so-called democratic government.
John Annis, London,
Inna, Sacramento, D. Bostan, Peter, San Diego - What utter arrogance, selfishness and crass insensitivity in the face of such events, with others likely imminent. Doubt you'd be quite so self-satisfied if these things had happened in the States.

I thought they were simply protesting against nightclubs. Close all of them and Britain is terrorism-free!
Esa Leskinen, Hämeenlinna, Finland
Europe and the Islamic culture do not mix. We should start by forcing our politicians , even if they kick and scream, to stop immigration from non-EC countries, fortwith. Our lives and civilisation are more important than their careers and income. We should also stop the manifestations of Islamic running loose in our cities. I refer specifically to the proposed triumphant "Olympic" mosque for 50-70,000 alien believers to be built in East London.
Marco Borg, London, UK
"Hopefully, in due course, with one former Prime Minister sitting in the dock at The Hague." -- John Annis, London,
Well said John, It's people like yourself that make Britain 'great'. It's good to see people with common sense in UK.
Jake, L.A, USA
Its simply amazing to see how complacent the british are to these attacks whos only purpose is to kill as many innocent people as possible. If you have a problem with your country's presence in iraq, protest and vote. Accepting blame for these attacks is a moral crime, and isnt the "intelligent" or "left wing" way to go. Any man who can, under religion's order, murder another man, is not to be dealt or talked to. We have to erradicate this way of thought and educate these people to bring them back to the human race, and taking blame isnt helping.
Asaf, Ramat, Israel
I initially got the impression that these terrorist were clever. These last attempts sound desperate. Unfortunately the peaople behind this have no understanding of how people in democratic countries react. A lot of Europeans have been doubting the Iraq-war and more so the last few years. Maybe Mr Brown would have pulled out of Tony Blairs war? But now, with these attacks, they are just reuniting the western world against their own cause. They are making it easier for those who want to stay present in Iraq, to argue for their cause. Europans will not be intimidated, and will now only stay longer.
Adam, Stockholm, Sweden
Dumbarton Rock:- The green Jeep that you saw heading for the airport - was it on fire? If so, there might be a connection. Report the incident to the terrorist support unit at your local mosque, or call the national telephone helpline: 1800ALLAHAKBAR.

John Annis...u have it totally right! these americans are disillusioned muppets for thinking the war in Iraq was justified! what more is there to say other than...God help america! we all know americans are "slightly" at a loss at an intellectual level and encapable of seeing the true and blatant facts and so try ever so hard to mock our ability in seeing things for what they are. God Bless England! the BEST land in the world! the terrorists attempting to cause fear and death are just as bad as dumb americans thinking they know what is going on in the world!
British Muslim, Crawley,, England
The invasion of Iraq was a results of 9/11. Therefore the argument that these attacks are a result of that is debatable.Unfortunately the terrorists aim of drawing the west into a prolonged conflict with Islam is bearing fruit.
Ed, London,
Yes Heather, without the "illegal" invasion of Iraq those peace-loving Muslims would never dream of attacking the UK, would they?
Pete, Sheffield,
'Peaceful way of life' oh yeah like Saddam gassing thousands of kurds and torturing his own people.
The UK has had 30 years of extremists with a distorted artificial view of the world somehow justifying their actions to kill incocents. Please don't condone their acts of attempted mass-murder otherwise you are no better than they are.
Simon, Watford , UK
"Imminently" is spelled incorrectly in this article. Can't the Time afford spellcheck?
John, London, UK

Don't be so niave. People were murdered in the World trade towers, before Afghanistan and Iraq. As was Lockerbie. Terroists have always threatened countries inc the UK, long before Iraq

James Vernon, Braintree, Essex.
Saying Islam is Fighting a war against Britian is like saying that the Christians were fighting a war against Britian during the IRA bombings and nobody then suggested sending troops to the Vatican to look for the "terrorists". This trouble is about oil and the American greed for oil and has snowballed into an uncontrollable mess. Look carefully at the "foot soldiers" and they are almost always unhappy victims of America treading jackbooted through their country or one that they had cultural ties with and are reacting ( Highly inappropriately I maight add) to frustration with such meddling.

With respecy to the bombers there bombs seem crude devices that rely on last minuit timing to be of any use and the attack at Glasgow seems to confirm this. The bigger problem is we have a large population of people in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Luton, Glagow, Walthamstow who share the beliefs of the bombers and are quite willing to hide and give support to these people. Talk to a young person of ethnic minorite in any one of these places, there views just might frighten you. We need to target these people so they are both economically and socially inclusive and there women have the same rights as most women in the uk..
Although we have followed a course of multiculture the core of our society is secular and religeous beliefs should not be shaping our laws.We should not be looking back towards a past based on superstition but a future based on obtainable freedoms and rights..Bombs in the hands of radicalised young men satisfy there need to be noticed but don't create a better future.
myron traveller, cambridge,
The symptom of 2nd gen muslims getting ready to blow things up makes me wonder if only 'sally' or 'susie' had smiled at little Mo when he was in 7th grade, maybe they wouldnt be upset enough to blow up girls at night clubs.Chalk it down to sexual humilation or frustration. I wonder if Freud would have had something to say about it?

And a Gurkha, awarded a VC for his services to Britain in the Second World War is denied a visa to come to Britain on the grounds that he cannot demonstrate links to the UK.
Perhaps he should be encouraged to join an extremist Islamic group. Evidently these people operate with immunity until they maim or kill.
Why are immigrants from Pakistan encouraged and vistors from Nepal denied entry. Who is responsible for such incoherent immigration policy?
Robert, saar, Bahrain
To Randall Spaan, you have given another good example of the double standards of the West, you say:
' You seem to forget that Saddam Hussein sued for Peace to end the first Gulf War. He then violated every single term of the armistice agreement he signed. And did so flagrantly for 12 years (and with the complicity of certain European states, as it turns out)'
Randall, you seem to forget that Israel has flagrantly violated the terms of the UN resolutions imposed upon it with the complicity of the US for 40 years!
So lets stop pretending we have any sort of moral highground, accept its a war, us against them, our way of life against theirs and get one with it. The invasion of Iraq was a dumb distraction from protecting our own way of life from the extremists.
john hall, Hyderabad, India
Hey, these folks might have been protesting the smoking ban. Maybe rather than pull out of Iraq, you should be lighting up all over the place?
Inna, Sacramento, CA/USA
John Annis, the vast majority of the deaths on the streets of Iraq are sunni versus shia. The British troops are not the ones car bombing innocent civilians on a daily basis.
I agree that the Brits should withdraw, and leave the Iraqis to it.
Sarah , Birmingham, UK
As long as the Brits will blame Bush not the islamo-fascists for the slew of attacks on their country, they will not have a prayer in winning the war that islam is waging on them.
Please, for the sake of your once glorious country, stop being PC and have the courage to face the reality: islam is fighting a war against the Great Britain!
Period.
D. Bostan, CA, USA
Londoners, which would you prefer, that Blair be Bush's poodle or Osama's?
Peter, San Diego, CA USA
Yesterday a woman came to me on the street and says "I dare your brothers to bomb this town". I retorted "I am not Muslim, I am from India". She says, "whatever, you are all the same". Looks like these terrorists are effective in putting fear into people and making them lose judgement.
Ranjith, Cardiff, Wales
This is to John Annis.....I wonder if you'll be saying the same things about Satan America and it's lackey Great Britian when you are told that your wife/child/parent/friend whatever was killed by a suicide bomber while they were going alog mindig their own business. Yes the invasion was wrong, terribly wrong BUT the the Americans and CO are not the ones killing civilians and "uprooting four million people". The killing fields are being created by Sunni and Shia ...they are killing each other. Becides which NOTHING justifies the cowardly act of a suicide bomber.
Linda, Santa Fe, USA
I believe it is the double standards being played by the west that has given birth to the terrorism. Hamas won a democratic election in Gaza but the west refused to recognise it. Iran wanted to build a nuclear plant just as other countries have but it's Islamic so it is not allowed. They used the pretext that Sadam Hussein had nuclear weapons and invaded it and has plunged Iraq into deep chaos. Giving Salmon Rushdie knighthood has surely infuriated Muslims. The west is full of double standards.
Sam Danso, London, UK

I know we're obliged to be in a state of perpetual excitement these days with our 24-hour media, but does anyone else think these latest terrorists are rather amateurish? Their main weapon seems to be a vague knowledge of A Level chemistry, or maybe a dodgy copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook on an old floppy disk.
hakluyt, cambridge,
John, these attacks have nothing to do with Iraq. The Islamic terrorists don't like you because you breath, you sleep, you eat. You're taking up space on this planet with your infidel body. Terrorists were attacking the US long before we invaded Iraq. Granted, they were small attacks, but then what's that to the US, right? We're a big country. What's a hundred or a thousand deaths here or there? We should turn a blind eye so that we don't commit the crime of invading a foreign country. Be angry with your own government for not seeing the threat sooner.
Lynne, Athens, Georgia, USA
Mr. Annis, one more thing, regarding your oblique reference to an "illegal" Iraq War: You seem to forget that Saddam Hussein sued for Peace to end the first Gulf War. He then violated every single term of the armistice agreement he signed. And did so flagrantly for 12 years (and with the complicity of certain European states, as it turns out). The Iraq War was not "an invasion of a foreign state," but the rightful means of an exasperated world coalition of nations (a coalition from which those profiting from the "Oil for Fraud" program were notably absent) to enforce the terms of the treaty breached in every regard by Mr Hussein.
Randall Spaan, Seattle, Washington USA
Iraq is an excuse, just like Palestine etc. Admittedly we shouldn't have given them another excuse to use, but there you go.
We're dealing with the same psychosis seen in the more extreme animal rights activists. "I'm not understood / agreed with - even though it's really me that doesn't understand - therefore I must kill to get myself heard."
Feeling that disenfranchised? Go to a madrassa, where you'll be understood. And then stay there.
David Harrison, Manchester, UK
Reading the previous responses, I am surprised of these reactions. It seems ther are dreaming in technicolor...
The terrrorist camps in Afghanistan were there and active before the Afghan war, before the invasion of Irak. These people are dreaming of their former glory and hope to implement their religion on the rest of the world.
Even if Saudi Arabia is keeping a low profile, she has put in place and paid for many imams around the world and these imams did not have always peaceful teachings!
All of us help Saudi Arabia act this way by using too much petrol, which in turn supply the money required for their plans. Lets develop other fuels or use other means so that we can get rid of the dictators of the Middle East, Russia, Venezuela, etc.
Claude Cossette, Montréal, Canada
Way to go Tony! Your illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq has put the UK at risk. Why oh why did you ever decide to become Bush's poodle?
Heather, London, UK

It would be helpful if the media stopped acting like hysterical drama queens and politicians stopped the prophet of doom speechifying. Calm down - we can at least try to be grown-up.
The bombers shouldn t be dignified by being called terrorists - they are delusional yobs with a taste for blood.
Can anyone provide the proof that GWBush and ObLaden are twins? They have a great deal in common.
dhrowlands, cardiff,
I was driving between the Dumbarton Rock and the Erskine Bridge yesterday at about 1-2pm and a vehicle that looked like the one at Glasgow Airport (as seen in the photographs) passed me on the outside lane heading for the Bridge. The windows to the front were lighter than those to the rear. The rear windows were that dark one could not see in it. The passenger in the front had a white/khaki shirt on.
I know it was pprobably not the vehicle at the airport.
But I would hate to think that they were simply driving around looking for a target. Even worse, that there may be two similar cars floating about.
Dumbarton Rock, strathclyde, scotland
Oh, for goodness sake. Have we turned into America, where every terrorist act is ascribed to al Qaeda? It may well cow the Americans, but I'd like to think we are made of sterner stuff.
"We will not allow anyone to undermine our British way of life."
That's a bit rich, seeing as we have been strongly complicit in mass murder in Iraq, which is now much worse off than under Saddam and where four million people have been uprooted from their homes.
It is probably true that the British Muslims responsible for these outrages have other strings to their bow, but anyone with even half a brain knows that these acts would not be happening if it wasn't for our illegal and immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq. The Nuremberg judges said that the invasion of a foreign state was the worst crime of all, so where does that leave us? Hopefully, in due course, with one former Prime Minister sitting in the dock at The Hague.
John Annis, London,
The prime minister may not think that Iraq and Afganistan have nothing to do with the bombings but history shows otherwise. When Britain got involved with Ireland that resulted in bombings by the IRA in London; the consequence on our war on terror is that we are a prime target more so than the USA as it is easier to get to the UK.
Joseph Kellie, Edinburgh, Scotland
Sounds like an Al Qaeda celebration that Tony Blair has been kicked out of office.
All I can say is that you reap what you sow.
Sounds like the fireworks are just beginning.
Does Brown plan to get tough, or will he suggest "counseling" the terrorists to find out why they are mean people. Waiting to see...
