On the streets of the Pollokshields suburb of Glasgow, home to Scotland’s largest Muslim population, there was a palpable sense of relief yesterday that the suspects being held in police custody for the terror attacks at Glasgow Airport and London were foreign nationals.
But there was also a lingering fear that the community would suffer reprisals simply for having brown skins.
Robina Chaudry, 39, a retail assistant who lives in the area, said: “I saw the bombings on TV and I feel really upset by it. White people looked down on Asians after the London bombings and I worry it will happen again. My kids go on the Underground every day and I fear for their safety.”
One retired man, who did not wish to be named, said that he had not heard of any backlash so far, but cautioned that the attacks could be used as an excuse for racism. “If these terrorists had been born or brought up in Scotland it might be different, but they don’t belong to our Asian community,” he said. “I think people will be tolerant – the Scots are in general – but there are fanatics in every society.”
Zeeshan Muhammed, 17, a pupil at Shawlands Academy who last month attended the country’s first Young Scottish Muslims conference, said that relations between Asians and other communities were in general good. However he admitted that last week’s terror threats could “change things”.
He said that he has already been the subject of taunts because of his faith.
“At school sometimes when I wear a [Muslim] cap they say, ‘Oh look, here’s Osama coming.’ Some are joking but others are serious.”
Across the wider Scottish Muslim community, faith leaders who feared racial tensions were encouraged by the news that the suspects were not British.
Bashir Maan, Scottish representative for the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “The community was very tense to begin with but since the new developments, that the attackers were foreign nationals, there is some relief - and also some hope - that things will not get as bad.”
But Osama Saeed, Scottish spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, argued that the backlash that followed the 9/11 atrocity in New York and the 7/7 suicide bombings in London was also possible in Scotland.
“Muslims are victims of these atrocities too and what makes it even more galling is that we’re also at the centre of a storm where everyone is pointing the finger of suspicion at us,” he said.

To Maggie: "Get those Imams out & into television studios & decry the the terrorists"
This is also part of the problem though. An increasing number of radical Imams are preaching their hate and go unchallenged by the wider muslim community becuse they are intimidated or threatened if they speak out. So yes get those Imams out.....out of the country or into prison. Instead of inviting them to advise the government about the problems we face. They are the problem.
I agree in principle with the drive of this article, but by the same token, how can any non-muslim not be increasingly suspicious of muslims in general. If these doctors can value life so little how can anyone trust a muslim doctor treating them or their loved ones.
Before I get branded a racist, I realise that this is exactly what the terrorists are trying to achieve, but what is the solution here, other than sitting back and turning a blind eye, which is the current government policy?
Jamie, Wellington,
It is far past time for Muslims to clean up their own house. This means pu8blicly rooting out the fanatics from their ranks. This means issuing edicts condemming and repealing fatwas issued against Rusdie. This means publicly outing the radical clerics and banning them from Islam. This means publicly acknowledging that the rules of law and society take precedence over the Koran. This mean rennouncing the religoius leadership of Islamic nations which support terrorism. This means assisting the government in apprehending homegrown Islamic terrorists. This means reporting clerics who attempt to inflame Islamic passions against the West. This mean proving to the Western world that the laws of the Western pluralistic democracies supercede the teachings of Islam.
This means a coordinated, ongoing, public dialog with Western civilization in which Western society can publicly observe the Islamic house being cleaned out.
Then the West will trust Muslims without a second thought.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
The muslim community hasn`t helped by the ambiguous statements from some of its leaders , there is bound to be those who will use this to follow their own sick agendas.
It is not farfetched to believe that there are radicals out there who would stir up trouble here because it fits in with their strategy; not only that its NIMBY(not in my back yard) so its somone elses problem . Radicals don`t care ! you only have to look closer to home at the so-called paramilitaries in Ireland to see the attitude involved .
Its a " we don`t care who gets hurt as long as its our agenda that wins out ".
Fanatics are the curse of today no matter which side they are on .
Iain Gore, Wirral,
well maggie could you explain to me how wearing different clothes makes someone untrustworthy. do you feel the same about hindu women in saris? please think your comments through before posting your blatant xenophobia
marion okole, oxford, england
It's a great pity that conscientious law-abiding Muslims are going to get the backlash as a result of the actions of a small bunch of misguided individuals who should know better. If some of those arrested are doctors, it would be interesting to hear how they equate their actions with their taking of the Hippocratic Oath.
E J Murray, Kerry, Ireland
It is governments responsibility to make sure that all of us are safe from both the muslim terrorists, and from those who might use terrorists incidents to attack muslims. There are plenty of people who would no doubt want to cause a riot and benefit from it. People should keep a cool head and not over-react and fall into traps. Yobs on boths sides try to exploit our fears. Lets not let any enemies of Britain win by doing exactly as they would want us to do.
Z Hussain, Rochdale, UK
Hmmmm..... Muslims flew planes into the World Trade Center buildings, Muslims flew a plane into the Pentagon, Muslims hijacked Flight 93, Muslims bombed the Tube, Muslims insurgents kill in Afghanistan, Muslim insurgents kill in Iraq, Muslims tried to bomb Fort Dix in the States, Muslims tried to blow up two vehicles in London las week, Muslims blew up one vehicle in Glasgow.
Gosh, I wonder why everyone is pointing fingers at Muslims?
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
When the twin towers were destroyed a nurse whose wife is a school teacher was greated by her Muslim pupils chanting Osama, Osama, Osama...., in the classroom the following morning.
The truth concerning interethnic relations during the present time is more complex than the simplistic view of racial intolerance that this article suggests. The problem is not as the stereotype here suggests.
Would anyone dare publish the comment that the BNP are far less dangerous than Islamicist extremists; I do not think that you will.
Jonathan, Birmingham,
When will the West wake up to the fact that islam itself is inherently a violent religion spread in the 7th century through violent means.Just look at the hatred they have for each other. The answer to why do they hate us is simple. We do not believe in the nonsense that they believe in.
john london, London,
Maybe now the Asian and muslim community in this country wil now condemn these vile acts properly with no "butsl" about foreign policy and put country before religion. If people of all faiths want to live together then the lives of their fellow citizens come first and religion should be a private matter and kept at home or in church. Veiled women or men should be outlawed in our country as a matter of security. The people of our country have been too tolerant of multi culturism and look how we have been repaid, if people do not like the western way of life they do not have to stay. I also object to any form of sharia law in this christian country, everybody abides by our law or leaves the country forthwith.
P Steele, Manchester, England
Obviously such events should never be an excuse for racism. It is a relief that the suspects are from abroad but there are also other homegrown fanatics at bay. One wishes to celebrate the diversity of society. However in a tolerant democratic society it is ever more impossible to trust your neighbours whichever faith or culture you represent. There are racists in every society but tolerance must also expect equal acceptance of the dominant societies cultural traditions. Muslims are not the only ones to feel agrieved by the quagmire of Iraq. I condemn war in the name of Oil and Jesus. But, it is thus now more important for Muslim leaders in Britain to condemn more loudly, more openly and more honestly these disgusting atrocities committed by educated people in the name of Islam so that this faith does not seem utterly corrupted in the eyes of Western culture.
Jane Ralph, Nuremberg,
Muslims are a small percentage of the population. Although there is a chance they will become victims of a terrorist attack there is a far greater chance that non-Muslims will be the victims, and foreign nationals or not, the suspects are Muslim. The terrorists convicted for the 7/7 attacks were British nationals, born here and brought up here by Muslims. British Muslims are more likely to be able to police their community than non-Muslims.
They should not slink around or be afraid but maybe be aware we rather hope they will act rather than wringing their hands saying 'its nothing to do with us'.
It would also be nice if occassionally the media spent a little time asking how the 52 million non-Muslims feel about what happened rather than always consulting the 2 million Muslims. We are affected too. Muslims maybe surprised to know the majority of us do not hate or fear them.
Peggy Webb, Blyth, England
It goes without saying that the risk of racial tensions between the white and Muslim communities, following the Glasgow terrorrist attack, is there. If Muslim citizens are targeted by racists looking for a good excuse for their racism or by people who don't realise that only a tiny fraction of the Muslim community is to blame for terrorrism in Britain, this would be a victory for Islamic extremism. But one that can only lead to a final defeat of Islamic extremists in the War on Terror. Because what it does is to make an open and frank debate inevitable. If people really feel that they need to ask themselves the question of whether every Muslim is, potentially, a terrorrist, chances are they will end up reaching the same conclusion that most people in Great Britain have grown accustomed to taking for granted.
Andre de Souza, London, UK
Funny how the interviewed people (1) yell before anything happens, and (2) do not distance themselves in any way from the actions their brothers planned and nearly executed. If a muslim somewhere around the world is attacked other muslem are at the forefront with protests and riots, but now the silence is omnious.
Little wonder then that fingers are pointing: how many of the interviewed secrtely hope for another, succeeding, attack in the islamic battle for world domination?
Peter, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
To the people speaking in this article, Get those Imams out & into television studios & decry the the terrorists. They are supposed to be your leaders, get them to lead.
Put more back into your society & let everyone see you are determined to integrate fully , stop wearing different clothes & people will not be noticing you so much.
Become British & show commitment. Show us we can trust you.
Maggie Millington, Brittany, France
We would want to see more coverage of UK Muslims condemning these attacks done in the name of islam, moderate muslims should route out all the extremenists, that is unless they have been scared into silence.
Wayne, Stockport,
