The deputy head of the al-Qaeda terrorist organisation threatened yesterday to punish Britain for rewarding Sir Salman Rushdie with a knighthood.
Ayman al-Zawahri, who acts as second-in-command to Osama bin Laden, said in an audio-taped message released on an Islamic website that a response was being prepared in retaliation for the honour.
Al-Zawahri said that the Queen had sent a clear message to Muslims by honouring a novelist who had insulted Islam [allegedly in his book The Satanic Verses]. He also appeared to make a direct reference to the failed bomb plots in London and Glasgow. In the past, al-Qaeda has indirectly claimed ownership for terrorist attacks.
In his taped message, al-Zawahri said yesterday: “I say to [Tony] Blair’s successor that the policy of your predecessor drew catastrophes in Afghanistan and Iraq and even in the centre of London.” He added in a message directed at Gordon Brown: “If you do not understand, listen, we are ready to repeat it for you.”
A spokesman for Downing Street said: “We do not intend to dignify this with a response. As the Prime Minister has said, we will not allow terrorists to undermine the British way of life.” The official added: “The British people will remain united, resolute and strong.”
The terrorist threat level has been lowered from “critical” to “severe” after the investigations into the London and Glasgow plots, but the police and security authorities remain on high alert for possible attacks.
The decision to give Sir Salman a knighthood caused anger among Muslims when it was announced. Ijaz ul-Haq, the Pakistani Minister for Religious Affairs, said in Islamabad that a suicide bomb attack would be a justified response to the knighthood. He also called for Muslim countries to break diplomatic ties with Britain.
However, after the veiled threat from al-Zawahri, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office hit back at al-Qaeda. “These terrorists care nothing for the peoples of the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan; al-Qaeda has been killing civilians of all faiths, including many fellow Muslims for years,” a spokesman said.
The official said that the award of a knighthood to the 60-year-old author was purely in recognition of his literary achievements. “The Government has already made it clear that Rushdie’s honour was not intended as an insult to Islam or the Prophet Muhammad,” the spokesman said.
He added: “It was a reflection of his contribution to literature throughout a long and distinguished career.”
In his latest message, al-Zawahri said that a “very precise response” was being prepared in answer to Sir Salman’s knighthood. His 20-minute address was entitled “malicious Britain and its Indian slaves”.

I do not see a single Muslim in thie country telling Osama Bin Laden that what he is doing is making it more difficult for Muslims here in this country. I am not a Muslim, but I would exhort my Muslim Friends to go live on national television and state equivocally that Osama Bin Laden should go to hell and that what he is doing is Unislamic. They also should declare their patriotism to the Queen. Only then will the ordinary people like me will not consider all Muslims to be on the other side. This is how they are stereotyped.
smk, London,
I don't recall a cleric ever attaching a bomb to himself and doing what they have told many others to do.
Have muslims not understood as yet the rest of the world equate Islam with terror.
HESS, BERLIN, GERMANY
Dismissing for the moment whether Rushdie has any enduring merit, the decision to knight him shows how staggeringly lacking in foresight our leaders are. Is not the first duty of government to protect its people? Doing a grand job aren't they?
john problem, London,
Another threat by these Muslim phanatics ; so what?
Do not let them win the propaganda war!
Andres, London, UK
First of all, i think it is inappropriate to call Muslim fanatics "barbarous". They are people as well. The key to this issue is communication. Cleary the Queen did not intend to offend Muslim groups, however, given the times we live in she should have been well aware that it could offend them. Unintentional insults can clearly escalate and be taken the wrong way, it is the job of public figures to be anticipate these reactions and act appropriately. There is no point retaliating with more violence, the situation will just escalate, and if you want to call these groups "barbarians" then the people of Britain would be stooping to a "primitive" level (sarcasm intended).

Bossy lot aren't they - who'd be one.
"Don't do this - can't do that - this is forbidden - that is not allowed - this is an insult - that is an insult...."
Get a life - or change religion.
Phil, Preston,
to be honest whatever they threaten to do to us, we can do 10x as bad, they threaten our queen and country and to me that is probably the worst thing you can do if you are trying to win people over to your way of thinking, in my opinion i hope there is a peaceful way to end the conflict but if not then i do hope every single al-queda follower/leader has a slow and painful end
mike, yorkshire,
Why is it we endure insult after insult from these barbarous ignorant clerics who know one thing only and that is to bring death destruction and suffering, to threaten, to murder and to make no usefult contribution to the planet. It is because we are more eveloved than these ill educated fanatics and have more humanity, thats why. It's time we went backwards in our thinking and got tough again. Really tough. We in the west should consider using the Bomb if our way of life is threatened by these heathen hoardes. We should make it clear to any country harbouring them that they are in the front line and responsible for their actions. Above all, we should take the fight to them.
John, London, UK
What will al-Zawahri's response be when moslems here get killed in whatever he's planning...just like moslems got killed in & July bombings and 9/11?
Luke Nicolaides, London, UK
It is very brave decision of HM the qeen of England . Britain should not ask the permission of a group of fanatic Muslems to do so or so . Beside Sir Salman is one of the bravest man who dare to say the truth . I can not understand why those fanatic are afraid of such simple criticism . They can simply say : No there is no Satanic verses in our Holy book and the broblem is finished .

I'd like to see the Times do a follow-up report on militants afflicted with delusions of grandeur and narcissistic rage. How this runt is given a voice while having nothing but contempt for free thought and no intentions of engaging in civil discourse is a mystery to me.
Michael, DC/Baltimore, US
Ayman al-Zawahri and every one that follows you are fools. Your inability to except the diversity of the earths peoples will overcome your pointless cause.
mike, Auckland, New Zealand
I think Sir Salman Rushdie would be a perfect candidate to be appointed as a U.K's peace envoy to muslim nations throughout the world.
