A doctor arrested on the M6 after last month’s attempted car bombings in London and Glasgow was remanded in custody today charged with conspiracy to cause explosions.
Mohammed Jamil Asha, 26, who appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates Court in London, is accused of conspiring with Bilal Abdullah, Kafeel Ahmed and “others unknown”.
Dr Abdullah and Mr Ahmed are alleged to have driven a blazing car into Glasgow aiport.
Dr Asha, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, who was wearing glasses and a white t-shirt, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address at the brief court hearing today.
His arrest on June 30 this year came after the discovery of two car bombs near a London nightclub in Haymarket, Central London and an apparent suicide attack on Glasgow airport.
He is the fourth person to be charged in connection with the terror plot and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on July 27.
Dr Abdullah, 27, an Iraqi, is also charged with conspiring to cause explosions and is scheduled to appear before an Old Bailey judge on July 27.
Mr Ahmed is in a critical condition in a specialist burns unit in hospital.
Dr Sabeel Ahmed, 26, the brother of Kafeel, is charged with possessing information that could have prevented an act of terrorism. He appeared in court on Monday and was remanded in custody.
Another medic, Dr Mohammed Haneef, 27, has been detained in Australia for immigration offences after being charged in connection with the plot.
Dr Asha’s wife, Marwa, 27, was also questioned by police for almost a fortnight before being released without charge last week.
The charge against Dr Asha reads: “That on diverse dates between the first day of January 2007 and the first day of July 2007 within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, (you) unlawfully and maliciously conspired with Bilal Abdullah, Kafeel Ahmed and others unknown to cause explosions of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property in the United Kingdom, contrary to section 31A of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.”
