A strict Muslim father who murdered his daughter in an 'honour killing' because she brought “shame” on his family by falling in love with the wrong man was jailed for life today.
Mahmod Mahmod was told that he would serve a minimum of 20 years for the murder of Banaz Mahmod. Her uncle, Ari Mahmod, was also jailed for life and told he would serve a minimum of 23 years at the Old Bailey today.
Ms Banaz, 20, had already displeased her family by walking out of an arranged marriage. After she was caught kissing Rahmat Sulemani, an Iranian Kurd, it was decided at a family meeting that they both had to die.
Two months later, Miss Mahmod vanished. None of her family reported her missing.
Only Mr Sulemani went to the police to say that his girlfriend's worst fears had come true.
Three months later, her naked body was found crammed into a suitcase and dumped in a 6ft makeshift grave below a pile of bin bags, a rusting fridge and a discarded television in a back garden in Birmingham. The bootlace that was used to strangle her was still tied around her neck.
A third killer Mohamad Hama, 30, was told that he would spend at least 17 years behind bars.
He, along with three other men who have left the country, killed her after she was raped and tortured for two hours. Miss Banaz was garrotted for five minutes but took half an hour to die as Hama stamped on her neck to “let her soul out”, the court heard.
Miss Banaz had asked police for help four times but was not taken seriously. She even gave officers a list of five people she suspected would harm her and Mr Sulemani.
After being taken to hospital following a previous attempt on her life, Mr Sulemani recorded her fears on his mobile phone.
The film was played in court and helped convict her killers from beyond the grave.
Sentencing the father and uncle, the Common Serjeant of London, Judge Brian Barker, said: “You are both hard and unswerving men for whom apparent respect from the community is more important than the happiness of your own flesh and blood and for whom killing in the name of honour is to be put above understanding and tolerance.”

What is HOLY about Islam?? What is Peaceful about Islam?
abbie, london, uk
Manan Aslam, you may be mistaken about honour killings. it may not happen in your family, but, it is more widespead than most muslims would like to acknowledge.
Bosun, NYC, NY, USA
This is not about being "a strict father" - this is about a religious killing, done by a person who was (at one time) to have been trusted by the victim.
Jim, Cheyenne, Wyoming USA
Can you not be a strict father without being 'muslim'?
If this man was a true 'muslim' he may have thought twice about murdering his daughter as it is strictly against his fatih...
I just don't understand why his faith has been mentioned?
Manan Aslam, Redditch, United Kingdom
I can see where killing your daughter redeems your honor. Yeah right!!!
Bruce L. Northwood, Washington, D.C., USA
I am not sure what is more abhorrent, what these so called men did in the name of their religion, traditions or the fact that members of their community helped conceal it and did not report them.
This girl came to this country to escape this kind of treatment and has been badly let down by the Police and her own so called community as well as her own family.
Its disgusting and i believe anyone who had knowledge of this crime should be prosecuted. What sort of country have we become where this kind of behaviour is allowed to happen, people with these views are not welcome here. It is against everything we hold dear.
This also makes a mockery of our Border Control as 3 of the men involved have left the UK, presumably for the country they claimed asylum from but probably claimed in their asylum claims that it was too dangerous to return too. Very similar to the Somali Murderer of PC Sharon Beshenivsky.
We need to harden our stance in this Country and less in favour of the criminals.
BEN, Brixham,
I can't begin to find the words to describe my horror and revulsion toward this crime, nor the hypocracy within it. Where does the evil in a person come from to make such a heinous act seem 'acceptable', never mind possible? I don't expect to ever find out the answers, such is the complexity of the human race. To the sister and boyfriend of Miss Mahmod, I pray you may find peace some day soon.
Frances, London,
How did such barbarians get into the UK?
Jean Abbey, Sydney NSW, Australia
Unfortunately, European law prevents me from expressing my opinion on this case. Not only have we unwittingly surrendered our most essential and basic freedom of speech and thought, we clearly must continue to endure the savagery and barbarism of alien cultures welcomed on British soil by our cowardly Government.
I suppose that's what the NuLabProj is all about, though; control of the people in the name of a nasty, cowardly ideal.
Paul Carlin, Dromore, Northern Ireland
These are sick sick people we are dealing with here. The entire family should be jailed for not reporting her missing and aiding and abetting this murder.
Mike, Edinburgh,
I do regard religion as a personl choice and something which should not be forced on others or indeed interfere with the laws that are in place in the UK. I was heartbroken to read this story and although we are told over and over that Islam is a religion of peace what are we supposed to believe when stories of this nature come to light. It is reported that Mr. Mahmod is a strict muslim so does that give him the right to kill to defend that belief? May Miss Mahmod's soul rest in peace.
Anne Edmondson, Athens,
It is terrible what happens in these third world countries isn't it.
Before somebody replies and tells me that this happened here. That's what I mean.
Alan, St.Helens, England
In the West we try to believe that all cultures are equal although they have different conventions, and we should be tolerant and non judgmental. These men were just doing what they believed to be right - and required of them.
I would ask whether a culture that condones murder of children in the name of pride and family 'honour' can be regarded by any half sane person as morally equal to, say, Britain's?
Tony Jones, Grantham, Lincs
Starting with "A strict muslim father who murdered his daughter" infers it was the man's religion and level or devotion to that religion that led him to murder his daughter.
Honour killings have NOTHING to do with religion and EVERYTHING to do with culture. This article SHOULD begin "A father who murdered his daughter..."
Islam does not allow father's to kill their daughters in the name of honour, nor does it force people into marriage against their will... this is culture.
amjad khan, London,
What a tragedy that a young woman should be abused and killed in this way for so-called 'honour'. These guys should be kept in prison for a very very long time. We sould have zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour against women.
Ian Burgess, Bristol,
Life should mean life, not 20 yrs and out after 10. This innocent girl died in the most horrific way, and all in the name of religion......... tragic..............
TB, Staffs, UK
Well, let's hear it from those who 'celebrate diversity' and claim that we must "respect" others' beliefs and cultures, no matter how alien to the British way of life.
Look forward to reading their defence of this 'honour killing' and the many others that have been perpetrated and their defence of those who carried out this bestial attack, plus their explanation of exactly where their "respect" comes into the equation.
j.harris, london, england
It is an absolute discrace...! Muslims are already critisized for the "radical" way they behave and that they should let loose living in the western society. Many muslims say that they live calmly amongst eachother in the community, which is true when something like this happens...!
I don't think killing justification when an incident like this takes place. Fundamental thing to know for any muslim is that to kill is a very serious sin and the consequence is the hell fire. So people like that should be locked up. They were not only a disgrace for the communtiy but for all the muslims who have children!
Azkaa Hassam, London, Uk
prison for life is not punihsment enough for the sadistic father, uncle and their envoys. Isn't it time to bring back the death penalty? With all its fault, there is a higher measure of punishment available here in the US.
A public outcry against these barbaric customs of avenging "dishonor" as well against as female circumcision should be waged daily!
Teresa, Chicago, Illinois, USA
The religion of peace? The message must be sent out to all who flaunt God's laws (thou shall not murder) so they either obey them or go back to the medieval country they have come from.
B J Deller, Marbella, Spain
I read the details of this poor woman's ordeal in the Times today. It is cases like this of cold blooded and pre-meditated torture and murder that convince me there is a place for the death penalty in a modern liberal democracy. Either that or these men should NEVER walk free. What they did was unspeakably evil.
The case also raises serious questions about modern day 'multicultural' Britain. Politicians are forever going on about our 'shared values' , but it appears that there are significant minorities in this country who do not share the values of the indigenous population. Maybe the government and its various institutions should be a little more concerned about reasserting British values and a little less bothered about accomodating the values of those who choose to settle here.
Andrew Brown, derby, UK
Wow! There are some wacky Muslims out there. Let this be a lessen to any young people searching for a religion to get crazy over: some Islamic rules violate human rights and will only lead you to jail - unless you still live in Islamastan of course, then fill free to kill your daughter and 'release her soul' if she dare smile at someone.
Mohammad Abu Jones, New Jersey, USA
It seems to me that these pathetic men are living in a quasi-primitive tribal world - and the extent to which tribalism dominates the Muslim world is overlooked and underestimated.
d h rowlands, cardiff,
This sends a clear message to those who would use 'religion' as a cover to comit vile attrocities against Humanity -
"if you want to commit crimes against others such as rape, torture and murder, don't do it in the UK - if you do you will be traced, found, caught and locked up - indefinitely".
I hope they stay locked up for the remainder of their natural. Not that this will solve the problem, but at least they won't have the opportunity to do it to anyone else.
Tarni, London, UK
