Holidaymakers saw two men beat a teenager to death on a summer afternoon in Britain’s leading surfing resort.
Joe Knight, 19, was punched in the face and stamped on as he lay unconscious on a busy road in Newquay at the height of the season, Truro Crown Court was told. He died the next day of bleeding on the brain.
Yesterday Andrew Bray, 26, and Thomas Dickson, 38, were convicted of murdering the teenager outside the Barracuda club last August.
Dickson’s boot matched that of an imprint left on the teenager’s face.
The court had heard evidence via video link from a 12-year-old boy who witnessed the attack. “It was an unprovoked attack by the bald man on the younger man,” the boy told the jury. “The bald man got him in a headlock tightly and punched him two or three times in the face with his clenched fist. He punched as hard as he could.
“During the whole fight, I didn’t see the younger man retaliate at all. He was just kind of dazed by it all.
“Then, just randomly, the skinny man just stamped on the man who was unconscious – on the head.”
Two holidaying pensioners from Northumberland also saw the attack. Herbert Nicholson said: “The first punch put the lad on the ground. He was badly hurt.” Mr Nicholson’s wife, Patricia, said: “He was like a ragdoll – he just flopped.”
The victim’s best friend, Peter Rowe, 20, a motor mechanic, said that he had arrived after Bray punched the victim unconscious. “Joe was slumped in the corner,” he said. “As Dickson walked over, he looked calm. As he got near, his face screwed up and he suddenly looked really angry and evil.
“He lifted his leg knee-high and stamped his foot on Joe’s forehead. Joe’s head took the full impact on the concrete ground.”
Bray had admitted manslaughter during the two-week trial at Truro Crown Court – a plea rejected by the Crown. He and Dickson were jailed for life and told that each must serve nine years before they can be considered for release by the Parole Board.
Martin Meeke, QC, for the prosecution, said: “This was a planned attack by the two defendants. They hatched a plan that Joe Knight would be attacked. They were spoiling for a fight. They were not there for a quiet drink.”
Jailing Bray and Dickson yesterday, Judge Graham Cottle said that the murder of Mr Knight, from St Dennis, was “another act of senseless violence which has tarnished the reputation of one of Cornwall’s leading holiday resorts.
“His family are left to mourn the needless death of one of their number who was loved and cherished.”

A death sentence makes us just as bad as these 2 animals. We do not have the full details on the man who was killed or the background to the murder. From what the article says, this was planned so was Joe Knight's character questionable also. In no way does it excuse what happened, but this case is probably far more complex than a brutal murder in broad daylight on an innocent man. Whatever the case, 9 years is an absolute joke. These men should be sorting our rubbish for recycling or breaking stones for 30 years, whilst receiving ONLY basic food, counselling and educational literaure in their free time. We need to be harsher and smarter in our punishment of prisoners in this country.
X, London,
I can't understand why they both received the same sentence. Life with parole review after 9 years for Bray is fair, but not for Dickson, he should be inside for at least 12 years before he is considered for parole.
Martin, Reading, UK
Nine years as a life sntence. What sort of message is this sending to the morons. Life seems to have no value and the state is not willing to stand up and take on the difficult task of proper sentencing. How would the judge feel if his own offspring had died. Would it be 9 years then ?
Hamad lone, Thornton Heath, England
In the Judges defense, they have very strict guidelines they must follow - I'm sure he/she would have liked to have given them a longer sentence, but their hands are often tied.
Blame the Government - thye set the sentencing rules, and because of the prison shortage, people can quite literally get away with the most violent murder.
Nicholas Ord, Guildford, Uk
Why a tariff of only 9 years? Scum like this should never be paroled. Build more gaols and then fill them. If you remove all the wrong doers from society it will be a much nicer place.
Paulk, Thornton Cleveleys,
Well said Pete.
There should be a review body set up for all sentancing that relatives of murder victims could apply to for sentance assessments. Run it with judges if you like but lay people that actually live amongst such scum would hand down more deterent sentances.
9 years! Disgracefully under punished.
This judge should be ashamed of himself.
David, Hong Kong, China
Hang them.
J.McCormick, London, UK
Nine years for a spiteful, hate filled and deliberate attack on this young man. Of course if this had been a racist or homophobic attack the sentence would have been much longer. However, what diferrence should that make? Human life is precious whatever colour, creed or sexual preference the victim may have. What a sick society we have, and it is not going to get better until someone has the courage to bite the bullet and bring back the death penalty. Thugs no longer fear the consequences of their actions and morality is fast disappearing.
