Three men have been arrested in connection with the murder of biker Gerry Tobin, who was shot dead as he travelled on a busy motorway ten days ago.
Assistant Chief Constable Bill Holland of the Warwickshire police said the men were arrested by armed officers at two addresses in Coventry and one in Nuneaton in the early hours of this morning. Reports said raids, which were carried out with the West Midlands police and officers from the Serious Organised Crime Agency, took place in the Wykencroft and Earlsdon areas of Coventry.
"This is an active and ongoing police inquiry," said Mr Holland, adding that further properties could be searched later today.
Mr Tobin, a member of the Hell's Angels, was shot in the back of the neck as he rode home from Bulldog Bash bikers’ festival in Warwickshire on August 12. Two shots were fired from a green Rover 620, the second of which hit his motorcycle. CCTV of the vehicle has been recovered but it does not show the number plate.
Mr Holland said the public response to the case has been outstanding so far, with more than 600 calls and emails offering information to the police. He said detectives were still keen to talk to people who had seen a dark-coloured Rover 600 series on the M40 between two and three o'clock on the afternoon of the murder.
Police released the last pictures of Mr Tobin, who was 35, earlier this week. Closed-circuit television footage taken at a petrol station forecourt showed Mr Tobin looking relaxed and smiling as he made his final stop before being shot dead.
Despite the willingness of members of the public to come forward, detectives investigating the shooting have made a special appeal to members of the Hell's Angels to share information about the killing.
Detective Superintendent Ken Lawrence, who is leading the investigation urged the group, famed for its fierce code of loyalty, not to take matters into their own hands. "I’m concerned that the Hell’s Angels are not coming forward and sharing what information they have with me," he said.
"I’m sure they will have theories about Mr Tobin’s death and I’m asking them to share those with the police. I would like to enter into a meaningful dialogue with them but they are reluctant to do that."
The murder of Mr Tobin, who was born in Britain but grew up in Canada, has prompted fears of a violent feud between rival motorcycle gangs. It is not known whether Mr Tobin had been singled out or was shot simply because he was wearing the Hell’s Angels insignia.
Motorists reported that the Rover was driven off at great speed immediately after the attack. Officers were studying CCTV images, including those of the Rover. Footage of the vehicle has been recovered but it does not show the numberplate.
The murdered biker’s mother has travelled from Canada to help police to build up information on Mr Tobin’s character and life.

This man was a member of an international criminal gang, not some kind of church social. I am quite sure that from word one and despite the police's protestaions of being a "man of good character" they knew exactly what they were dealing with, a "hit"... and most of them don't happen by accident, to innocent people.
