Police hunting the killer of 11-year-old Rhys Jones said they arrested five more people, including two girls, today.
A spokesman for Merseyside police confirmed that five teenagers were arrested from the Croxteth and Norris Green areas of Liverpool.
The boys are aged 15, 16 and 19 and the girls are 15 and 18.
Another boy, aged 15, is already in custody having been held yesterday
The 11-year-old schoolboy’s murder has exposed a widening divide between Merseyside Police and those who live in the Croxteth Park area of the city.
Local people complained that the force had failed to address concerns about gang-related crime. Police responded by expressing their frustration at the lack of information emerging from the community, which was hampering their efforts to track down Rhys’s killer.
Fears that Rhys’s death could trigger a battle between rival drugs gangs grew stronger with the news that police had adopted stop-and-search powers which by law can only be adopted “in anticipation of violence”. Officers have been ordered to wear stab-proof vests when patrolling the estate where Rhys lived.
Sources admitted that reprisals were possible in the wake of the killing. One officer said: “Everything is not good. We are really worried that there could be retaliatory killings between gangs. Then everything could spiral.”
Patricia Gallan, Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, appealed yesterday for locals to find the courage to come forward with information about the murder. “The answers are within the community,” she said. “This boy was an innocent and we need the help of everyone in this community to tell us who is responsible for this crime. I need more help.”
Some residents hit back by claiming that Rhys might still be alive had police shown a greater determination to protect them. Although he lived and died in a relatively affluent area of the city, Croxteth Park is sandwiched by the troubled council estates of Norris Green and Croxteth.
Both have high crime rates and problems with drug-dealing gangs. Gun violence is common and the area is notoriously difficult to police as teenage gang members who visit the area to commit crimes are able to use a network of walkways and surrounding fields to make their escape on quad bikes and bicycles.
As the community and police accused each other of a lack of cooperation, Rhys’s parents visited the scene of his death and wept as they viewed the growing collection of tributes, including Everton football shirts, scarves and pennants left in memory of their football-loving son. Stephen and Melanie Jones delivered their own bouquet of blue roses and gerberas.
Their message read: “Goodnight and God bless, son, till we meet again. All our love and kisses, from mum, dad and Owen.”
Everton FC will hold a minute’s silence before their Premiership match at home to Blackburn Rovers today. Players from both teams will wear black armbands. David Moyes, the Everton manager, and the club captain Phil Neville appealed for the public to provide more information

as a mother of 4. from liverpool. l say its time for tighter gun laws. anyone with a gun. should get life. because if they dont want to harm someone why have a gun...... whare did the old fashioned back garden fight go.
moreso what has happened to the kids of todays childhood? kids dont seem to have a childhood these days. young boys have staffordshire bull terriers. as side kicks in other words for protection. as for this little 11 year old boy. l am heart broken for his parents, friends family and nieghbours.
what kind of person just fires a gun or any waepon at kids playing ? the person who gave the person the gun. is just as guilty. the persons who helped the person who killed little rhys, are allso guilty. and should stand trail. no mercy should be shown here. like no mercy was shown for this little boy. l only hope and pray that the goverment take heed now. make tighter gun laws. and at least let other kids live in peace. instead of fear

I don't know how kids can be so violent and sick in the mind to kill other people. What has this world come to?

For Rhys
What world do we live in when someone takes a Childâs life?
When some maniac strikes with a gun or a knife
An innocent boy had been playing his game
Which he hoped one day would lead him to fame
His name was Rhys Jones he never knew what was to come
Been practising his football his team maybe had won
On his way home to the Mum and Dad he adored
To tell them about the goal he might have scored
Then a hooded gunman rode past, stopped and took aim
In that split second the familyâs life would never be the same
He fell to the ground this wonderful boy
The gun that was used was never a toy
A young life extinguished, why and what for?
His friends stood around could not do any more
A true blue he was could have really set his mark
Now he will never grace the pitch at Goodison Park

In a way I do not blame the community for not coming forward. They have been complaining about gang violence for a long time. The the police have done very little to solve this problem.
If they come forward now, when the case is out of the news, the police will 'drop' them and there lives and family lives will be in danger.
The law system seams to be powerless in the face of yob criminals and you just know that if you are targeted, the police will just give them a sob story about how their hands are tied.
The problem with this situation is that it gives gangs power over the community.

If these terrible tragedies are going to continue to happen, the British society will turn into a sick, pervert society where unsound values will become a part of a every day´'s life and the majority of people will not bother about these criminal acts any longer.
How a term " in wrong place, at wrong time" can be considered as something which ordinary people have to live with when in the reality it is only a pretext for those who are unable to create security on the streets!
It is a shame that politicians in this country are ready to spend millions of pounds on the Olympic games while at same time they are treating their own citizens as if they were sheep without feelings and the ability to think!
Bess, Uppsala, Sweden
We are sick and tired of the violence in this country. Where do the guns come from? I am sure it must be immigrants aggravating the problem as there is virtually no check on who is in the country. Until the governments forget the stupid PC nothing will ever change. Why are we so worried about upsetting foreigners, we fit in when we go to their country, we have our age old customs and they should fit in with that when they are here. No wonder people are leaving this country in droves. It's time parents and police took a harder line, parents these days think their little darlings can do no wrong.
